1.
Write an essay describing any one volume of Bergey’s Manual and
including details of four of the bacterial groups found within the
selected volume.
2.
Write an essay describing Phenetic Classification of bacteria.
3.
Compare and contrast the use of isotope tracers and changes in
oxygen levels for assessing microbial activity in natural environments.
OR
Compare and contrast the roles of microorganisms in aquatic
ecosystems to those in terrestrial ecosystems.
4.
Write short notes on two human viral diseases. In each case, include in
your answer a discussion of the nature of the virus, the mode of
transmission, the symptoms of the disease, and its treatment or
prevention.
5.
Describe the microbiology of aerobic and anaerobic wastewater
treatment. What are the advantages and disadvantages of both
processes?
6.
Write an essay entitled “Microbial decomposition processes”.

Discuss the microbiology of the nitrogen cycle.
7.
With reference to “Koch’s postulates”, describe how Robert Koch
established that the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis is the
causative agent of the disease Tuberculosis (TB).
