Mrs. Lummis’s Classroom: Newsletter – April 22, 2016 Happy Friday! Just a reminder that our Spring Open House is on Thursday, May 5 from 6:30-7:30 PM. Please visit our school, bring your child, and see what interesting and fun projects second graders have been doing! Your child should be working on reading at least 20 minutes a night for the April reading log. Please be sure that he/she is reading a minimum of 400 minutes a month. The April reading log is due on Tuesday, May 3. In reading, we have continued our fiction unit. Our class completed many activities with making inferences, defining author’s purpose, working with main idea and details, plot, defining character traits, and determining point of view. We have also learned about all different genres of reading, their definitions, and looked at many examples of different genres. In writing, we are working very hard on writing expository essays for our community helpers. We are writing four paragraphs that include job description, location and equipment, school/training, and other important facts. Each paragraph includes a topic sentence, three details, and a conclusion sentence. These paragraphs are all in one packet and will come home next week to be typed. When the packets come home, please help your child to type the information in the packet into four paragraphs. This will be your child’s expository essay. It will be glued on to the “tummy” of your child’s decorated community helper that was already turned in. Please do not lose this packet! It will be your child’s only copy to type their expository essay. When you are finished typing the paragraphs, you can send it into school and we will do the gluing! It really looks great when completed, so thank you for all of your help! In math, our class has been learning all about money and playing games using money. We are also learning two digit subtraction using number lines and hundreds charts. In science and social studies, our lessons continue with plants, animals, and history. We have learned about the different parts of a plant, and animal characteristics. Our class has gotten our mealworms that students are caring for and we have continued our scientist of the day activity. If your child has not been scientist of the day yet, he/she will be assigned an experiment in May! We will begin our study of economics in May as well. Have a wonderful weekend! Mrs. Lummis
