Room 404 Newsletter September 11, 2015 Curriculum Updates In Reading, we are working together to become a reading community. We are learning how to participate together in reading workshop by listening, learning and sharing with each other. Great readers listen, share ideas and feelings, learn information and words, and make connections to their own lives. We will be practicing these skills within our reading community. Guided Reading began this week. The children are learning how to rotate between a variety of stations including; working with a teacher, read to self, work on writing, word work and listen to reading. The children will chose new leveled take home books (in the fabric bag) each day. Please remember that these books should be read to an adult at home and returned to school the next day. We are so excited to see that the home reading incentive tickets are really coming in!! Keep up the great work with reading at home! In Language Arts, we are focusing on the components of a sentence. Students have been evaluating sentences for four main things. 1. A capital at the beginning of the sentence. 2. Spaces between each word. 3. A period at the end of each sentence. 4. A complete thought. We are encouraging your children to apply these skills to their daily journal and classwork. We have also been working with the first trimester objectives of beginning and ending sounds and rhyming. In Spelling, students have been learning to recognize and spell the first 13 sight words. It is really important that these words are mastered and applied to daily writing. This Tuesday, your child was given a set of sight words. Spelling homework will come home on Monday’s with the sort. The homework is due every Friday. In math, our first unit consists of recognizing, representing, writing, and ordering numbers 0-19. We will continue to focus on these skills next week. In Social Studies, we began our first unit: My School and Family. We are learning about our community at Isaac Fox. Several times a month, Mrs. Hope, our social worker, will come in to highlight a specific social or emotional skill that is essential in helping students navigate the school setting. We will update you on the skills taught so that you may reinforce them at home. In conjunction with our social studies unit, this week Mrs. Hope explained her role in our school and the types of skills she works on. In the next few weeks, she will utilize the book You Are a Social Detective by Michelle Garcia Winner to help the students use their social smarts to demonstrate the difference between expected and unexpected behavior in all the places they play, learn and go.
