Room 404 Stars September 25, 2015 Curriculum Updates In Language Arts: We are continuing to work on writing in complete sentences. We broke sentences down into naming parts (subject) and telling parts (predicate). We will continue to look at different components of a sentence and will be introducing parts of speech with NOUNS next week. In Reading: We are in full swing with Guided Reading! Here the students work in small groups with a teacher each day on many reading skills at their instructional level. We are sure you have noticed your child’s book bag coming home with a book to read to you! Please be sure to sign your child’s book log after they read to you. It can be found in the book bag. Your child needs your support with reading at home, so please find the time for reading each night. On that note, the reading tickets have been coming in like crazy!! We are thrilled with the amount of reading that is happening at home. The October Reading Incentive tickets will be coming home next week on October 1. Please continue to send in those tickets!! We began our work with short vowels and short vowel word families this week. We have worked with short “a” and the “at” and “an” families so far. Next will be short e. We are continuing to progress through the Launch Unit of the Reading Foundations curriculum. These whole group lessons are helping the children discover how to be a part of a reading community and develop their listening, sharing, and discussion skills. In Spelling, students have been learning to recognize and spell the first 40 sight words. It is really important that these words are mastered and applied to daily writing. Next Monday, your child will be given their Words Their Way sort/list. The homework will come home on Monday’s with the sort. The homework is due every Thursday. (This is a change.) We have practiced sorting words and completing the homework together in class. Almost everyone turned in the spelling homework this week. This is a skill on the report card. In Math: We just finished our first Module in Origo Math. In this module, we learned about place value. We circled and created groups of ten and ones, we wrote in expanded form (1 tens and 5 ones = 15), and we added numbers to ten to create teen numbers. We have been very busy! Daily lessons and work are completed in individual journals. Few papers will be coming home. Module 2 will expand students understanding of numbers through 20. We will continue to decompose numbers to deepen our understanding (subitizing) of numbers 8 and 9. Room 404 Stars September 25, 2015 In Social Studies, we continued with our first unit: My School and Family. This week we talked about the importance of rules. We have worked on creating and understanding the reasons for rules in our community. Next week we will be learning about our community at Isaac Fox. General Information Your child should be reading a minimum of 10-15 minutes per day. Please remember to keep track of minutes on the reading tickets. Keep the reading tickets coming in. The last day for these is Wednesday, September 30th. Please continue to send in water bottles. Our water fountain is in the process of being repaired.
