Curriculum Updates
Reading: Our class is continuing to
grow as a community of readers. In
our whole group lessons, we are
learning about the genre fiction. We
are learning about the importance of
story elements (characters, settings,
problem, solution). We are also
beginning to practice visualization
(making a mind movie) while reading
and making personal connections with
our reading material. When you
read at home, talk about these
things with your child and practice
with them.
We have been assessing your child’s
reading levels over the past two
weeks. New Guided Reading
groups will begin as soon as we are
done leveling each child. A reminder
that these leveled books (in the cloth
bag) should be read to an adult and
returned to school the next day.
We continue to work with all the
children on decoding and
comprehension strategies, developing
phonics knowledge and fluency, and
responding to reading through
writing.
Thank you for all of the support you
are providing with the reading
incentive program. Those ghosts are
coming in like crazy!!
Language Arts: We continue to
work on writing in complete
sentences. Students are responsible
for writing in complete sentences with
proper punctuation and
capitalization. We are learning
about the different types of
sentences; Telling, Asking, and
Exclamatory sentences.
Spelling: Next week the homework will
come home on Tuesday with the sort
and will be due on Friday (due to
the day off on the 12th). Almost
everyone turned in the spelling
homework this week. 
Math: We have been working on
writing number sentences and using a
number line to count on.
Science: We will begin our study of
Solids, Liquids, and Gases next week.
Social Hour
The past several weeks the class has
been focusing on expected behaviors

in the classroom and being
responsible! More specifically, we
took some time to really understand
what it means to listen with your
whole body! How do you listen with
your whole body?? Listening Larry
taught us you need to listen with
your:
Eyes: Look at the person who is
talking to you.
Ears: Both ears ready to hear.
Mouth: Quiet, no talking, humming or
making sounds-Voice Level 0!
Hands: Quiet in lap, at side or on
your desk.
Feet: Quiet and still on the floor.
Body: Still and upright, facing the
speaker.
Brain: Thinking about what is being
said.
Heart: Caring about what the other
person is saying.
Practice whole body listening at
home while you are eating dinner
together or sharing about your day
with your child. The more they
practice these skills and hear the
language in all the places they
interact, they will become internalized
and just part of who they are!
