Development of multi-scale experimental and computational (finite element) methods for nonlinear solid mechanics, with application to failure prediction (fatigue, thermo-mechanical fatigue,
wear, creep, fracture), manufacturing processes, novel product design and functionality,
sustainability and mechanical efficiency.

Multi-scale thermo-mechanical fatigue of advanced high temperature materials for power
generation
This project, in collaboration with Prof Noel O’Dowd at University of Limerick and ESB Energy
International, involves the development of multi-scale computational methods for high temperature
cyclic plasticity, creep and fatigue of power generation plant, including welded connections, and
experimental testing of next generation power generation materials for improved efficiency (ultrasupercritical plant) and reduced emissions and flexible operation. The work is critical for integrity

and safety of plant in the era of more flexible use due to increase uptake but irregular nature of
renewable energy.
Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway:
Close links with engineering industry, including offshore engineering oil and gas Industry, polymer
manufacturing industry, aerospace industry and automotive industry.
Advanced computational mechanics for non-linear problems; international collaborations with UK universities,
including Universities of Oxford, Nottingham and Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine.
High temperature, low cycle faigue test rig, advanced materials characterisation capability (SEM, XRD,
nanoindenter etc).
