Brief summary of PI research / research group / centre activity (2 or 3 lines max):
If you are already involved in relevant scholarly activities relating to Brazil, please mention them here.
Main research areas are in magnetic component design and power electronics for computing
loads and renewable energy sources, including energy harvesting, wireless power systems and
biomedical applications.
Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web):
Development of wireless powering systems: focusing on inductive coil & shield layer optimisation
and power electronics for primary driver & secondary rectifier circuits. Coil optimisation will be
investigated for resonant coil systems which will be applied to improve power transfer across
large distances, and the scope for increasing the range of applications to higher power levels will
be determined.
Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway:
The Power Electronics Research Centre has a world-class reputation for magnetics design. It has
built up strong links with other research groups in the U.S.A., Europe and China.
There is ongoing collaboration between PERC and the Tyndall National Institute on magnetic
materials development, including for shielding of inductively powered systems.
