The main areas of interest of the group are human performance in complex systems, integrated
management systems in biomedical and medical systems, ergonomics in the workplace and
occupational health and safety. The research group is truly multi-disciplinary comprising subject
experts from the Colleges of Science, Engineering, Health Promotion, Law and Business.
Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web):
Title: Development of a risk assessment tool to control risk of MSDs in healthcare workers.
There is an increasing awareness that healthcare workers are exposed to musculoskeletal disorder
(MSD) risk factors in their work and that this is leading to an above average incidence of MSDs
among this worker population. There is general agreement that the following ergonomic risk
factors, or combinations of these, are present in the healthcare profession: awkward and/or static
postures; task repetition; force; duration; working environment and psychosocial factors. This
project will develop a risk assessment tool to support this cohort of workers working in both
clinical and domiciliary settings.
