Brief summary of PI research / research group / centre activity (2 or 3 lines max):
If you are already involved in relevant scholarly activities relating to Brazil, please mention them here.
The host research group is concerned with the application of signal processing and communications
technology in a range of biomedical applications, including breast cancer detection, and low-power
wearable technology for health monitoring.
Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web):
Breast Cancer Detection using Advanced Radar Technology
This project is concerned with the development of advanced technology for early detection of
breast cancer. The focus of the project is on the combination of low-power radar with sophisticated
computer-based imaging and classification techniques to detect tumours at an early stage of
development. The objective of the project is to improve on existing approaches for cancer screening
based on X-ray mammography, which have a number of limitations, and a particular interest of the
host research group is detection of tumours in younger women. The project will involve
collaboration with appropriate clinical groups in University Hospital Galway, as well as research
groups internationally.

Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway:
NUI Galway projects should emphasise features that are not typically available in Brazil – specific equipment,
multi-disciplinarity, aspects of structured programme, links with industry, placements, links with other research
groups etc.
The host research group has a growing reputation in this field. They have access to relevant clinical
collaborators in University Hospital Galway, including the National Breast Cancer Research Institute
(http://www.nbcri.ie), as well as international collaborations with leading groups in this field,
including University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Calgary.
The project will be hosted in NUI Galway’s recently-opened School of Engineering, the largest in the
country. This €40m building is equipped with state of the art laboratory facilities and a range of
specialist development and test equipment.
