Main research areas are in magnetic component design and power electronics for computing
loads and renewable energy sources, including energy harvesting, wireless power systems and
biomedical applications.
Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web):
Magnetic component / power electronics for distributed renewable energy systems: focusing on
the application of power electronic solutions developed for variable load profiles to improve the
efficiency of renewable sources under variable source power levels. Energy sources to be
considered include PV, wind and CHP.
Unique selling points of PhD project in NUI Galway:
The Power Electronics Research Centre has a world-class reputation for magnetics design. It has
built up strong links with other research groups in the U.S.A., Europe and China.
The New Engineering Building at NUI Galway is widely instrumented with electrical power meters,
providing a test bed for different load types.
