Dear Parents,
Many thanks to those of you who were able to come to our open house! It was wonderful to have
the opportunity to chat with you and for you to see your child’s classroom. I hope you have a
wonderful Thanksgiving with the ones you love.
What we will be learning in October:
Math:
Please practice counting by 2s, 5s,
10s, 25s to 200.
Also practice
counting
backwards
with
those
numbers from 50. We have been
learning to represent numbers using
ten-frames, base ten blocks, number
lines and 100 charts. Ask your child to
represent a number between twenty
and one hundred in three different
ways (i.e. using base ten blocks, tally
marks, ten frame, pictures, number
sentence, using money, point to the
number on a number line or on a
hundreds chart).
Language:
During writer’s workshop, the children
will be encouraged to write and draw
about personal experiences in their
writing books.
We will be working on descriptive
writing. We will be using adjectives to
describe our writing. Students will be
describing their favourite snack and
toy. Students will create a haunted
house and create a descriptive writing
piece using adjectives to describe
their haunted house. Any extra
practice at home is beneficial!
During reader’s workshop, we
will continue to read every day;
independently and with each other and
respond to our reading. Our class is
learning how to how to identify the
beginning, middle and end of books.
Science:
We will continue our unit on Life
Systems. Ask your child about the
living things (invertebrates and
vertebrates) we have explored in our
classroom. Students will research an
animal of their choice and then
present their work to the class. All
research will be done in class with the
use of books from the library and
using the internet as a tool to collect
information about their animal.
Religion/Family Life:
We will read bible stories on creation
and we will learn about Jesus’ friends
the disciples. We will talk about what
makes us unique/special in family life.
Virtue of the month: Empathy
Reminders:
 Indoor shoes should be kept at school. If you have not yet sent them to
school please do so as soon as possible.
We have had a great start to our school year! Thank you for preparing your child so
well for this year. It is a privilege to be a part of your child’s educational journey.
