WHAT’S NEW?

It was so nice to talk with so many of you last night at conferences! I am looking forward to talking with everyone else on Monday!! It makes my heart happy to have this opportunity with each of my kinder’s

Reading

parents  Please return signed report card envelopes.

:

We have spent time learning about some of the elements of fiction text – characters and problem

& solution. As you read fiction stories with your child, stop and ask them about the parts of the story.

Phonics

:

(all 26 ABC letters, ch, sh, th, wh, or, ar, er (ir, ur), ing, ed) Please continue to practice all sounds that have been introduced and return the folder to school on Monday, especially the tricky sounds! Our beginning readers are working hard on segmenting words into their separate sounds, writing the sounds they hear and blending the sounds to read CVC words (3 letter words). We are really focusing on the short vowel sounds - some can be confusing!

Writing

:

During our Writing Workshop time, we selected our idea for publishing, next step drafting! I am encouraging the kinders to be BRAVE writers, instead of asking “How do you spell ____?”, I want them to try to str-e-tch the word and write the sounds they hear. The words may not be spelled correctly, but they will be spelled phonetically (how they sound) and that is ok!!

Math

:

We know our shapes!! Your child should be able to identify and describe 2-d (flat) shapes.

Please make sure your child is completing the math homework games each week and returning the bottom portion to school.

Additional

:

* Words Their Way: “word sorts”, We have finished all beginning sound sorts. Next, will be sorts with rhyming words and syllables to reinforce these skills.

* Snappy Words: Take some time to practice these words with your child to help build fluency in reading & writing. (a, and, I, me, you, the, my, is, to go, can, we, he, she)

* Science: We continued our unit on Physical Science by exploring how things, animals and people move and the difference between push and pull.
