LESSON FOCUS:
This lesson focuses on drawing a still life from direct observation using assorted drawing pencils.
VOCABULARY:
Blending: Technique of shading through smooth, gradual application of dark value.
Crosshatching: Technique of shading using two or more crossed sets of parallel lines.
Hatching: The use of parallel lines to create shading.
Pencil: Drawing and writing tool that consists of a slender, cylindrical casing around a marking substance.
Shading: Graduated variations in value, often used in painting to give a feeling of volume, form, and depth.
Still life: Painting or drawing of inanimate (nonmoving) objects.
Value: An element of design that relates to the lightness and darkness of a color or tone.
PROCEDURE:
Choose one of the still life arrangements in the art room to draw.
Do several sketches of the still life.
You must include at least five (5) objects.
You must draw what you see (do not move the objects).
You may take objects off the page.
You may draw from an unusual viewpoint (from above or below, etc.).
Choose your strongest composition and enlarge onto Bristol board.
Finish in pencil.
Use must use a full range of values in order for your objects to appear three-dimensional and realistic.
The objects must be accurately drawn.
Work slowly, building up your darks gradually.
If needed, practice making values on scrap paper.

14” x 17” white plate Bristol board
Assorted drawing pencils
