Mrs. Mills’ Geography Syllabus and Classroom
Management Plan
Objective:
All students will be given the opportunity to succeed in social studies. Through this course, each student should become
more aware of global issues and the world around them and should be able to explain why many aspects of the world
are the way they are in today’s society. We will also explore how physical geography shapes settlement patterns,
economics, and culture.
Rules:
Be responsible. This means that you should bring your materials to class, turn in assignments on time, and take
account for your own actions.
Be respectful. This means that you will not interrupt the teacher or other students, call names, raise your voice,
use your cell phone, or deface the classroom.
Do your best.
Grading Procedures:
•
•
•
Homework: Homework will be given frequently. It is important that all students practice the concepts being
presented to them. Completing and turning in all homework assignments will be vital to the student’s success.
Most times students will have ample time in class to complete assignments.
Tests: Tests will be given at the end of most chapters.
Constructed Response and Projects: At least one Open Response Questions will be given for each unit covered
throughout the year. In class group projects will be given periodically. Grading will be based on participation as
well as an understanding of the concept being presented.

Absent and Late Work
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get your work out of the “Absent Work Folder.” Generally, you will not be
reminded. If there is nothing in the folder, it does not mean you did not miss anything. Please be sure to ask if there is
nothing in the folder. You have as many days as you were absent to get the work returned. Late homework, or work
not turned in when it is due, will be accepted for half credit. Any late work must be turned in by the posted date each
midterm. Late projects will be accepted with a different policy.
Discipline:
•
•
•
•
Verbal Warnings: will be used most frequently. They should be enough to allow for a student to make changes
in behavior.
Slashes in agenda: Slashes are for tardiness, incomplete homework, being unprepared for class, and minor
infractions. Two slashes from any classes in a week will result in missed coke break. Two slashes in the class
will result in parent contact.
X’s in agenda: An X will be given for major infractions, lying, cheating, and backtalk. An X will result in a missed
coke break and a write up.
Office Referral: Seldom used and only for the worst infractions.
Classroom Supplies:
Sixth graders will receive extra credit for bringing in a box of colored pencils, glue sticks, and a box of tissues. Markers,
scissors, paper and additional glue sticks and tissues have been provided by the other classes. In order to complete
projects in class, it is necessary that we have these supplies in class. Students will not be allowed to leave class to get
their personal supplies from their lockers. I prefer loose leaf paper. It is necessary that you bring your agenda, book,
paper, notes, and writing utensil to every class. Unpreparedness will not be tolerated.
I feel that communication is key to student success. Because of that, I will post test and quiz dates on the agenda at
least 3 days prior to the assessment and it will be posted on my website (accessible through the school’s homepage.)
Also, I will make parent contact on an as needed basis to make parents aware of their student’s progress.
