POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: EXTENDED TITLE: FLSA STATUS: Specialist Financial Aid Specialist -Veteran’s Affairs Non-Exempt CATEGORY: Classified GRADE: D JOB SUMMARY: Provide skills and knowledge for the performance of specialized duties in the administration of student financial aid services and to serve as an advisor to student aid recipients. Responsible for interpreting complex rules, regulations, procedures and policies to students, parents and outside entities. Responsible for complex decisions requiring initiative and judgment in responding to individual student needs. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 60% 1. Provide prospective and current students information regarding VA educational benefits and regulations. Assist with completion of applications and additional documentation. Advise students of VA academic regulations/requirements to include but not limited to, goal setting, program selection, VA eligible course substitutions, petitions, course equivalencies, and cross-walk requirement’s evaluation of transfer credit, class scheduling and admission/registration procedures at EPCC. Monitor student’s academic performance to ensure curriculum compliance with degree plans and VA eligibility. 2. Assist students in resolving District/VA conflicts such as course withdrawal, grade changes, academic progress, test scores and remediation, specialized admission requirements, overpayment of benefits, non-receipt of payments and other conflicts interfering with the student’s academic progress and/or receipt of VA educational benefits. Work directly with Department of Veteran Affairs and internal staff to better help veterans, reservist and eligible dependents. 15% 3. Assist students and prospective students regarding the Hazelwood program. Advise students of eligibility and application process. Review courses for Hazelwood eligibility. Record award on Banner system. 15% 4. Assist with emergency loans, provide financial aid applications and related information via phone and in person, answer questions relating to the filing process, assists student’s in the process with completion of the FAFSA application. Assist with outreach efforts in community. 5% 5. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Associate’s degree EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years experience. SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Skills/Abilities: Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; effective communication both oral and written and proficient computer skills. 2. Equipment Used: Personal Computer, fax, telephone, copier, and other equipment associated with an office environment. 3. Software Used: A variety of word-processing, spreadsheet, database, e-mail, and presentation software. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Duties require little physical effort in work with light (up to 10lbs), easy to handle materials. Duties performed causes light fatigue of eyes, fingers, or other faculties due to long periods of standing, sitting, and/or repetitive motion. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Alternative or combined skills in counseling and/or influencing people are important in achieving job objectives, causing action, understanding others, or changing behavior; and, skills of persuasiveness or assertiveness, as well as sensitivity to the point of view of others. WORKING CONDITIONS: Job is performed in general office or comparable working area with occasional distractions such as noise, interruptions, or congested work areas with exposure to some disagreeable elements.
