A message from
your Chairman
As announced last November,
we’re paying shareholders an
interim dividend of 3p on
4 February, an increase of
15% on last year. We continue
to pursue a prudent financial
strategy, to make sure we
can invest in the business,
support our pension scheme, reduce net debt
and return value to you, our shareholders.
We’ve accelerated our fibre roll-out plans and
now expect fibre to be available to two-thirds
of UK premises during spring 2014, more than
18 months ahead of our original schedule.
The recruitment of more than 1,000 engineers
over the past year has helped make fibre available
to more than 13 million premises in the UK,
exceeding the number reached by Virgin Media.
Early completion of our roll-out to areas where it’s
commercially feasible will enable us to concentrate
further on working with the public sector to
extend fibre to the ‘final third’ of the country.
BT is a partner in YouView, the exciting new
television venture led by some of the UK’s biggest
names in TV and broadband. YouView brings
catch-up TV and a wide range of content to your
television set over your broadband connection
and has already won industry awards.
We plan to launch the BT Sport service later
in the year. It will show a range of live sports,
including the very best club rugby and some
of the most thrilling Premier League football
matches. The service will offer real value and
great quality using the latest technology.
Of course, the communications we enable
go beyond the sphere of entertainment.
Better communications can help to create a
better world. We take seriously our obligations

to help towards that, so we’ve set goals specifying
what we want to deliver by 2020. For example,
we’re committed to using our skills and technology
to generate more than £1bn for good causes
over the next seven years. We will also help our
customers reduce their carbon emissions by at
least three times the end to end carbon impact
of our own business. The challenges are huge
but so too is the opportunity.
Finally, I want to say how proud everyone at BT is
of the contribution we made to the London 2012
Olympic and Paralympic Games. I’m delighted at
the recognition we gained both as a sponsor and
for creating the bespoke networks and services
which connected the Games to the world. As I look
back on 2012, it’s clear that Britain did a fantastic
job showcasing so many of its positive attributes
and with BT at the heart of events we were able
to demonstrate what we as a company can deliver.

Fraud –
protect your shares
• Would you know what to do if you received unsolicited phone calls
or correspondence?
• Read on...
Some shareholders have received unsolicited
phone calls or correspondence about their
investments.
These are often from overseas based ‘brokers’
who target UK shareholders. The caller will
typically be calling out of the blue and offer to:
sell your shares at a premium; buy shares for you
at a discount; or offer you free company reports.
Although they may not ask for money right away,
and assure you that nothing is payable, this is
likely to come later.
These operations are commonly known as
‘boiler rooms’. The ‘brokers’ (callers) can be
very persistent and extremely persuasive.
They often have websites to support their
activities, their advice and the companies
they purport to represent.
You may be asked to complete some form
of documentation. We strongly suggest that
you do not do this as it often contains much
of the information required for a share transfer.
If it sounds too
good to be true,
it probably is.
How do you know what is genuine?
If we ask you for information relating to your
shares we will always ask you to return it either
directly to BT or to our Registrars, Equiniti. Both
addresses are on your dividend documentation.
If you have already received an unsolicited call
about your shares and have completed and
returned documentation, you should tell the
Financial Services Authority via their website
www.fsa.gov.uk or call them on 0845 606 1234.
