September 2014 Shareholder Exclusive Chairman’s message 2 Shareholder prize draws 4 E-shareholder info 10 December 1984: First day of trading of BT shares on the Stock Exchange. A message from your Chairman In December, we will be recognising 30 years since BT was privatised. We now operate in the most competitive telecommunications markets in the world, a fact that benefits companies and consumers and which has helped us to become the company we are today. See more on pages 6 and 7. We held our annual general meeting (AGM) at Old Billingsgate in London this year and you can find full details of the meeting, including the voting results, online at www.bt.com/btagm2014 At the meeting, I reported on a very positive year – one where our financial results continued to meet or exceed expectations – allowing us to reward you, our shareholders, in line with our previous guidance. I am pleased to report that at the AGM our shareholders approved a final dividend of 7.5p (up 15%), meaning a 15% increase in the 2014 full year dividend to 10.9p per share. We have continued to implement the strategy outlined at the AGM, and have made a good start to the current financial year. It has included the launch of our BT One Phone proposition, which provides businesses with an innovative fixed-mobile solution that should also save them money. We continue our rollout of fibre optic cable and every week, 70,000 more homes and businesses can access fibre, making ours one of the fastest broadband rollouts anywhere in the world. Our fibre broadband network now covers more than 20 million premises. Demand for these services remains strong and the task now is to push fibre further into rural areas. The immediate aim is to put 90% of UK properties within reach of fibre broadband, and then to go further. The rural rollout process is well under way, in partnership with central and local government. 2 BT Sport has just celebrated its first birthday and has brought new competition and greater value to the market for pay TV. The second season of BT Sport has some great content lined up and it will continue to be free with BT Broadband. Delivering a superior customer service is a major focus for us. We have made some progress this financial year. We are fixing faults faster and have seen a drop in the number of complaints we are getting. But we have more to do to deliver a step-change, which is why we are investing in our infrastructure, our systems and our people. In recent months we have announced a further 2,500 jobs to support our investments in fibre and customer service. Our goal is to deliver sustainable, profitable revenue growth supported by the investments we are making. We made notable progress towards this goal last year, and I am confident BT will make further progress in the period to come, delivering long-term value for our shareholders. Sir Michael Rake Chairman 8 September 2014 Fibre broadband is transforming the lives of people all over the UK. Delivering a superior customer service is a major focus. We are investing in our infrastructure, systems and people. BT Sport hosts some of the best live sporting action and continues to be free with BT Broadband. In the UK we are delivering one of the fastest rollouts of 3 fibre broadband in the world. It was the first major privatisation, the first-ever floatation of a public utility, and it opened up the stock market to a new audience. While much has changed over the last 30 years, BT has continued to lead the way through using the power of communications to make a better world by making connections, creating possibilities and delivering value. nal ernatio igital int d ll a n e t firs e betwe World 's e servic elephon public t yo and Tok London First-ever live satellite TV pr ogramme from a ship at sea broadcast from the QE2 6 from moving anges etwork nic exch o r Digital n t c le e o t l a ic mechan BT Open zone off ering public wifi access 2012 art of London BT at the he 12 ye ars of B T Br oadb and £1.5 billion fibre broadband rollout BT S port - f BT B roadb ree to and c ustom ers 7 Making a difference in local communities BT has always believed in the powerful impact of volunteering, and that BT people can use their passion, expertise and skills to release the potential of others. We actively encourage our employees and other stakeholders to give their time to make a difference in their local communities. All Join In – BT’s national volunteering network Releasing the potential of thousands of disabled children Together with the London 2012 volunteering legacy charity Join In, BT is building a national network of volunteers supporting grass-roots sports clubs and community groups in their local areas. Linked to its long history of supporting disability sport, in August BT launched ‘All Join In’ – a campaign encouraging sports clubs across the UK to enable people with disabilities to participate. BT has extended its partnership with the Lord’s Taverners – the youth cricket and disability sports charity – to fund the installation of at least 13 new multi-sensory rooms in special needs schools over the next three years. BT will also maintain all the specially adapted classrooms (including those funded from 2010 to 2013) up to 2020. BT’s Paralympic Ambassadors, including double gold medallist wheelchair racer Hannah Cockroft, supported the campaign in the build-up to National Paralympic Day on 30 August. Sign up and find out more at www.joininuk.org/i-want-to-help 8 The multi-sensory rooms feature a relaxing and stimulating variety of lights, sounds and textures, which help children with disabilities learn in an environment that suits their educational needs. Find out more at www.bt.com/betterfuture The Supporters Club celebrates its first year The Supporters Club is BT’s initiative that aims to build a better world by bringing people together through sport. We work with Comic Relief to invest money raised by BT Sport customers in fantastic charitable projects both in the UK and overseas. We have developed a sustainable grant-making fund that will support projects using sport as an enabler for social change. Money raised helps fund coaches, mentors and teachers who work with young people to help them overcome challenges and fulfil their potential – it’s all about supporting the supporters. A year after the launch of The Supporters Club, over 80,000 BT customers have signed up for monthly donations. Through BT and its customers, more than £2.5 million has been raised. Eighteen charity projects have been supported so far with more to come. Find out more at www.bt.com/betterfuture Celebrating 25 years of the British Paralympic Association BT was the founding partner of the British Paralympic Association (BPA) when it was created in 1989, and has been a strong supporter of disability sport ever since. To help the BPA celebrate its 25th birthday, BT – through The Supporters Club – created a special ‘BPA Birthday Bursary’ fund of £25,000, which donated grants of £5,000 to five disability sports clubs in the UK. BT has already confirmed its commitment to supporting the BPA all the way to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, helping the next generation of Paralympic champions achieve their dreams.
