WEEK 7 - DNA Structure And Replication
This week's lectrures dealt with DNA as a source of information, a kind of software, its
structure and its replication for use by daughter cells.
You should now be able to:
1) Describe the structure of DNA.
2) Explain how a relatively simple "dictionary" of codes can produce complex proteins
3) Explain the difference between transcription and translation
4) Explain how DNA is replicated
5) Explain how the classic experiments on the green algae Acetabularia identified the
nucleus as the site of hereditary information
6) Identify the different phases of meiosis and mitosis and explain the importance of
each phase
7) Explain the physical difficulties associated with information access, replication and
transfer
8) Contrast prokaryote - eukaryote DNA structures
9) Explain how homologous chromosomes are moved toward opposite poles
10) Contrast sexual and asexual reproduction
11) Explain the evolutionary significance of mutation, crossing over, random
segregation and fertilization
