North Central Thames Foundation School (NCTFS) Individual Placement Description - East and North Herts NHS Trust Placement The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Location Supervisor(s) Main duties of the placement Typical working pattern in this placement F2 Acute Internal Medicine Acute medical wards comprising mostly of Acute Medical Unit & Short Stay Unit. Accepts direct admissions from GPs, but majority are acute A&E. See a wide variety of medical conditions, including monitored patients as ACU overflow. See a wide-range of patients and conditions. Need to be very organized and be able to cope with a high turnover of patients, with the associated jobs – such as discharge summaries, specialty referrals and organizing investigations. Management of a wide-range of patients, involving all specialties, with daily in reach from these specialty consultants providing exposure to many learning opportunities. Excellent opportunity to develop multidisciplinary team working, time management and prioritisation techniques for use in all future careers Unparalleled opportunity to develop skills in managing patients care in community settings – ambulatory care, liaison with district nursing teams, interface geriatrician, allied health professionals and primary care. Handover and communication skills development through morning report attendance and daily MDTs. Lister Hospital Dr B Zalin, Dr R Quail, Dr K Marshall, Dr M Kelly, Dr M Cranston, Dr S Mirza, Dr F AlSalttan, Dr M Ehsanullah Attendance at daily consultant led and supported ward rounds. Ward work – including basic procedures, opportunities for more advanced procedures, routine and urgent organization/requesting of investigations and referrals, liaison with the daily MDT, communication with patients and relatives. Management and ongoing review of acutely unwell medical patients. Attendance at weekly clinical governance, audit and teaching session, leading the sessions (with consultant support) on a rotational basis Also, on-call rota – lasts for 6 week block. Including late shifts, nights and ambulatory care. Attendance at medical morning report daily to provide robust verbal handover of patients transferred to specialties. Normal working days for majority with 6 weeks of on-call rota between.
