CODE ISSUES FROM PREVIOUS MEETING
What is the policy on replacing a damaged meter can when the old existing SE
cable exceeds the permissible length of unfused conductor? Is replacing the
meter can only sufficient or should a panel also be installed so that the old SE
will have overcurrent protection?
When a meter can is replaced due to damage, replacing the meter can only is
sufficient. However, the two grounds rods are still a requirement. If an existing
meter can is replaced that contained a tap to an outside a/c main breaker panel it
will be permissible to allow the contractor to split bolt the conductors in the new
meter can in order to prevent having two wires under one lug. (A 200a meter can is
suggested in order to make joints and maintain wire bending space)
Is it permissible to use Table 310.15 (B) (6) on a feeder to a sub panel at a
single family residence?
YES, If that feeder is a main power feeder. A main power feeder is a feeder
between the Main Disconnect and the Lighting and Appliance branch circuit
panelboard. See examples
Is a new circuit required to be run on a water heater replacement that is fed
with an existing non-grounded circuit or is it permissible to run a separate
ground wire to the nearest grounding electrode?
Yes a new circuit is required, there is nothing in the code that supports allowing a
ground wire to the nearest grounding electrode in this situation. The code permits
this method on receptacles and light fixtures only. At present, the county is allowing
this method on furnaces, however; since the code does not support this we will
phase out allowing this on furnaces to completely phased out by January 1, 2008
Are you required to wire an unfinished area that contains a fireplace?
We will address this issue once we get further information from the building and
mechanical departments.
Is WP ground based (1) the largest ungrounded Service-Entrance Conductor
or (2) the largest sum of the areas of the corresponding conductors of each set?
#2: the largest sum of the areas of the corresponding conductors of each set
