OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS 31. Why did yo u cho o se this pro gram? T e xt Re spo nse I had traveled to Vienna befo re and fell in lo ve with the city. The peo ple are very nice and there is a lo t o f histo ry and culture that makes the city very well ro unded. The pro gram was new so I tho ught it wo uld be exciting to go so mewhere no o ne at USC had been befo re. Vienna is also a city that is no t very to uristy (altho ugh it is beautiful and sho uld have mo re to urists). I enjo yed that I co uld walk do wn the street and no t hear English every 5 minutes and that no t run into a to urist gro up very o ften, I felt mo re immersed in a new culture and city. I have previo usly visited Vienna, Austria and lo ved it so I had to co me back! Because it was an area that was o ffered in Euro pe that I had no t previo usly been, o r really knew abo ut, and I enjo y jumping into things head first. Vienna o ffers the perfect central setting with bo th western and eastern euro pean influences, a great lo catio n fro m which to travel to and fro m, and it is literally the best place to live in the wo rld--very high quality o f living. I cho se the pro gram because it pairs yo u with a buddy, has a mo nth lo ng o rientatio n pro gram where yo u literally just spend a mo nth getting to kno w vienna, neighbo ring cities and everyo ne in yo ur pro gram, the co urses are extremely flexible to the po int where I o nly have 20 days o f class. Also , Vienna bo rders Germany, Slo venia, Slo vakia, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Czech, Hungary and is so clo se and centrally lo cated to amazing cities that traveling is so easy! Also , the erasmus pro gram has trips to places like Venice fo r Carnivale, Munich fo r Okto berfest, Amsterdam fo r Queens Day, Po land, the Alps fo r skiing, Budapest, etc. It is also o ne o f the o nly pro grams that sets yo u up in student do rms. I live in a 17 flo o r building where 4 flo o rs are just exchange students! IT IS THE BEST PROGRAM EVER! The OK o rientatio n pro gram was a big push fo r me to go to Vienna. The OK pro gram was great mo nth lo ng pro gram that allo wed me to meet a lo t o f o ther internatio nal students and experience Vienna befo re the semester began. The blo ck co urse schedule is also great fo r travelling because I wo uld o ften o nly have 1 o r 2 classes in a week. I also fo und the blo ck co urses to be mo re effective and efficient than the regular schedule we have at USC. St at ist ic To tal Respo nses Value 6 23. 32. Did yo u like o r dislike these differences? T e xt Re spo nse As a matter o f fact, the structure o f the classes are very different then tho se at USC. When registering fo r classes, I no ticed that o ften classes do no t o ccur the same time every week. Also , there are classes which take up large blo cks o f time but o nly meet 4-5 times to tal. In the last class, yo u take yo ur final exam. So it is po ssible to be finished with classes by early May if yo u plan it this way. I had to make an excel sheet in o rder to plan classes to make sure no ne o f them o verlapped, that was a bit tedio us but I do like being able to be do ne with a class within a mo nth because I remember the material better. Yes, yo u have the o ppo rtunity to take classes that last abo ut 7 ho urs a day fo r a week, instead o f the class lasting the entire semester. I tho ught this was great especially when making time to travel to o ther co untries and if students had jo bs. The co urses taught in English are in blo ck structure. I like this fo r the free time, but the inco nsistency creates an enviro nment that makes it difficult to stay in an academic mindset at all times. They were very sho rt and fo cused classes that o nly lasted fo r 6 -7 meetings fo r co ndensed perio ds o f time. I tho ught that it was a great structure fo r students studying abro ad because it lightened up o ur schedules so that we co uld explo re and travel fo r lo nger perio ds o f time. I perso nally liked it better because yo u have mo re flexibility than a class schedule back at USC and a lo t mo re individual and gro up wo rk o utside o f class instead o f a to n o f face-time in the classro o m. Co urses are extremely flexible. Yo u have to take 30 ECTS units to get 15 USC units. Mo st o f the Co urses in English o ffered at WU are 6 ECTS. So me o f the sho rter classes are 3 ECTS. I am taking 4 classes that are each 6 ECTS and 2 classes that are 3 ECTS. I am taking Fo undatio ns o f Internatio nal Business, Leading Respo nsibly in a Glo balized Wo rld, Ethics o f Glo bal Marketing, Marketing in Emerging Markets, Wo rking in Teams and Co mmunicatio n and Co nflict Management. I am an acco unting majo r and wanted to avo id math and finance subjects so I to o k the easiest co urses I co uld find. Also , I made my schedule acco rding to least days o f class po ssible. I start class o n March 4 and end May 31. I do no t have class fro m March 15-April 3 o r fro m April 26 -May 20 . As yo u can see, classes can be arranged to be as flexible as yo u want! Yo u just need to be o n yo ur game when it co mes to registratio n. My registratio n date was January 30 at 2pm. I was lo gged into the system at 1:50 pm and started hitting refresh at 1:59 pm and clicking register like crazy. All internatio nal students register at the same time fo r every class so if yo u are no t right o n time, yo u will no t get any o f the classes yo u want. I go t every class I wanted so I am lucky. Plan ahead o f time which classes yo u want and have backups just in case. Also , yo u will find that many o f the dates o verlap so try to find co urses that do no t o verlap. Fo r the mo st part, teachers are pretty easy go ing and do no t care to o much abo ut participatio n since a majo rity o f the classes o nly care abo ut yo ur final grade. Fo r example, my Fo undatio ns o f Internatio nal Business co urse is every Mo nday and Wednesday fro m March 4-13 and then April 3-April 15. My Wo kring in Teams and Co mm/Co nflict Management Co urses are each o nly two days and then my Marketing o f Emerging Markets is May 21-24 fro m 10 am5pm fo r the fo ur days. It is crazy ho w different and flexible the class schedule is so yo u have to be smart and o n yo ur game when registering. Blo cked co rses. I really liked this structure because yo u co uld be do ne with an entire co urse within a mo nth o r even a week. This structure made travelling much easier. Please explain: T e xt Re spo nse Definitely take Fo undatio ns o f Internatio nal Business with Puck-Easy class and it is really interesting! (yo u do n't have to attend class either). Take Ethics in Internatio nal Business with Go tze, she is a sweet-heart and the class again is very easy but also interesting and relevant in any business career. If yo u are go o d at Statistics, Risk management and Insurance is a go o d class because it is o nly a mo nth lo ng and yo ur grade is the co mbinatio n o f 3 sho rt tests (o verall yo u o nly need to get 6 0 -70 to tal po ints) My Fo undatio ns o f Internatio nal Business teacher, Mr. Puck, was amazing. He had much experience dealing with fo reign co mpanies and used his perso nal examples in class to make what we were learning applicable to the real wo rld. Yes. I was able to take unco nventio nal business co urses that I had never seen available at USC. Such as: Sustainable Business, Internet Eco no mics, and So cial Media Marketing. The marketing and management co urses I to o k were very insightful and the pro fesso rs all extremely kno wledgeable and enco uraging. I felt very co mfo rtable presenting and having discussio ns in my classes because they were mo stly small (aro und 15-20 peo ple) and a relaxed atmo sphere. i perso nally reco mmend Glo bal Branding and Internatio nal Marketing and Management as my two favo rite classes. Fo undatio ns o f Internatio nal Business with Jo nas Puck was AWESOME! There is even a party at the end o f the co urse with the internatio nal business faculty and students! He made the law class very co nfusing and pretty bo ring. I had friends taking mo re traditio nal finance, o r acco unting classes that said they were quite difficult. No ne. Do no t take euro pean business law- ive heard it is miserable! Internatio nal Strategic Management I - Even tho ugh the co ntent can be interesting, the structure o f the co urses are awful. Here at WU i have had the o ppo rtunity to take classes that do n't even exist at USC. I have learned fro m my classes here what career I sho uld, and sho uld no t pursue. This is WU's pro gram fo r exchange students and they have multiple trips to Budapest, Krako w, Skiing in Austria and this is a great way to so cialize with peo ple in yo ur pro gram and they are also cheap!! Flying in and o ut o f vienna is no t the cheapest. Flying o ut o f budapest o ffers cheaper o ptio ns which is a 45 min train ride fro m vienna. Ho wever, since Vienna is basically in the middle o f eastern euro pe there are many trains and buses available to travel all o ver. Plan ahead as much as po ssible. Take busses to smaller nearby cities and fly o ut o f there fo r much cheaper. Be flexible--things will go wro ng, yo u will get lo st, yo u'll pro bably miss a train o r two --but experiencing these amazing places is so metimes mo re fun than fo llo wing an itinerary o r getting caught in to urist traps. Vienna is so centrally lo cated that yo u can get anywhere yo u want so easily and fo r barely anything. Use skyscanner.net to search fo r cheapest flights because it takes into acco unt the cheap airlines like Ryanair and Easyjet. Easyjet o nly flies fro m Vienna to Lo ndo n but o nce in Lo ndo n, yo u can get anywhere fo r dirt cheap prices. Ryanair flies o ut o f Bratislava but as mentio ned befo re, it is o nly 6 euro s to get there so it is super easy. My best advice to yo u wo uld be to go early befo re yo ur pro gram starts and get so me o f yo ur travelling o ut o f the way. I wo uld also suggest that yo u go to an OBB train statio n hub at Westbanho f and get the Vo rteils student disco unt card fo r under 26 year o lds. It gives yo u 50 % o ff o n train tickets in Austria and up to 25% o ff internatio nal destinatio ns like Slo venia and Czech Republic. It was o nly 20 euro s so to tally wo rth it. (OBB is the main train co mpany in Austria). I perso nally did no t think getting an EU rail pass was wo rth it because flying is so cheap but so me peo ple do have it and are making it wo rk.
