Singapo re is a very Westernized co untry so I felt very co mfo rtable. Singapo re is o ne o f the best places to learn abo ut business because o f the fo cus o n entrepreneurship. Singapo re is also a great place to learn abo ut the diverse Chinese, Indian, and Malay cultures in additio n to the natio nal Singapo rean culture. I wanted to study in So utheast Asia and Singapo re was my favo rite lo catio n in that regio n. I also wanted to study in Singapo re because o f its diversity as a co untry and its high business reputatio n as o ne o f the 4 Asian Tigers. I preferred SMU o ver NUS because SMU was lo cated do wnto wn and I wanted to be aro und the main city area o f the co untry. Ho w, if at all, do es the structure o f the co urses differ fro m tho se at USC? Did yo u like o r dislike these differences? T e xt Re spo nse Much mo re fo cus o n gro up wo rk while abro ad, less day to day assignments...Less stress while abrao d.. Each class yo u have a gro up pro ject that acco unts fo r a large percentage o f the o verall grade and the gro up meetings can co nsume a large amo unt o f time, this was a dislike but gro ups are very understanding o f exchange students and their travel schedules and make it as acco mmo dating as po ssible. A lo t mo re gro up pro jects at SMU. Yo u have to meet a lo t mo re o ut o f class fo r these pro jects. There was mo re gro up wo rk abrao d SMU's class structure is pretty similar to USC, except they put far mo re emphasis o n gro upwo rk. Alo ng with a gro up final pro ject, there are usually a co uple in class gro up presentatio ns. I wo uldn't mind this so much, except mo st classes keep yo u in the same gro up fo r the entire semester, and if yo u get stuck in a bad gro up fro m the very beginning, getting these pro jects do ne with is like pulling teeth. Each co urse o nly meets o nce a week, which I like mo re because yo u have mo re time to do o ther things. Mo st o f the wo rk is fo cused o n gro up pro jects that are usually wo rth either the majo rity o r a large percentage o f yo ur grade. If there are any finals, they are usually cumulative in stead o f co vering o nly half o f the semester. There also may be either no o r few individual assignments. Lastly, all o f the majo r pro jects o f the semester and so me majo r tests o r quizzes tend to be during the last two weeks o f classes, so the wo rk o f the semester is mo stly fo cused at the end o f the semester. I disliked the difference o f the heavy weight o f the gro up pro ject o n my grades and the heavy fo cus o f the semester's wo rk at the very end o f the semester. There was much mo re emphasis o n gro up wo rk, and a final gro up pro ject in every class was wo rth either mo st o r a large percentage o f yo ur grade. The semester also tended to have the mo st classwo rk fo cused o n the last 2 weeks o f scho o l. At USC, mo st o f the classwo rk is usually fo cused between midterms and finals so there is no t as much stress because o f wo rk is mo re spread o ut. St at ist ic To tal Respo nses Value 8 26. 35.
