VI. OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS 31. Why did yo u cho o se this pro gram?
T e xt Re spo nse
Lo catio n, Quality o f Educatio n, Co untry Histo ry
Asia is beco ming the center o f business; favo rable exchange rate; warm climate and tro pical travel destinatio ns; wasn't sure when else I wo uld have the chance to explo re
So utheast Asia in the future because o f the lo ng distance fro m the US making 1 o r 2 week trips less practical than Euro pe
Lo catio n, English-Speaking Co untry, Heard go o d things abo ut it
Lo catio n in So uth East Asia, english language spo ken, safety o f the city.
Experiencing new cultures and co untries is very impo rtant to me.
Because I wanted to be immersed in a different culture than my o wn and I wanted was very impressed by the facilities and reputatio n SMU has.
Because I wanted to study in So utheast Asia in a co untry where I wo uld feel co mfo rtable and learn a lo t abo ut no t o nly business but also abo ut different cultures. Singapo re
is a very Westernized co untry so I felt very co mfo rtable. Singapo re is o ne o f the best places to learn abo ut business because o f the fo cus o n entrepreneurship. Singapo re
is also a great place to learn abo ut the diverse Chinese, Indian, and Malay cultures in additio n to the natio nal Singapo rean culture.
I wanted to study in So utheast Asia and Singapo re was my favo rite lo catio n in that regio n. I also wanted to study in Singapo re because o f its diversity as a co untry and its
high business reputatio n as o ne o f the 4 Asian Tigers. I preferred SMU o ver NUS because SMU was lo cated do wnto wn and I wanted to be aro und the main city area o f the
co untry. I also wanted to study in Singapo re because it is a travel hub, so I co uld have the o ppo rtunity to travel to many co untries easily when I had breaks in the semester

Much mo re fo cus o n gro up wo rk while abro ad, less day to day assignments...Less stress while abrao d..
Each class yo u have a gro up pro ject that acco unts fo r a large percentage o f the o verall grade and the gro up meetings can co nsume a large amo unt o f time, this was a
dislike but gro ups are very understanding o f exchange students and their travel schedules and make it as acco mmo dating as po ssible.
A lo t mo re gro up pro jects at SMU. Yo u have to meet a lo t mo re o ut o f class fo r these pro jects.
There was mo re gro up wo rk abrao d
SMU's class structure is pretty similar to USC, except they put far mo re emphasis o n gro upwo rk. Alo ng with a gro up final pro ject, there are usually a co uple in class gro up
presentatio ns. I wo uldn't mind this so much, except mo st classes keep yo u in the same gro up fo r the entire semester, and if yo u get stuck in a bad gro up fro m the very
beginning, getting these pro jects do ne with is like pulling teeth.
Each co urse o nly meets o nce a week, which I like mo re because yo u have mo re time to do o ther things.
Mo st o f the wo rk is fo cused o n gro up pro jects that are usually wo rth either the majo rity o r a large percentage o f yo ur grade. If there are any finals, they are usually
cumulative in stead o f co vering o nly half o f the semester. There also may be either no o r few individual assignments. Lastly, all o f the majo r pro jects o f the semester and
so me majo r tests o r quizzes tend to be during the last two weeks o f classes, so the wo rk o f the semester is mo stly fo cused at the end o f the semester. I disliked the
difference o f the heavy weight o f the gro up pro ject o n my grades and the heavy fo cus o f the semester's wo rk at the very end o f the semester.
There was much mo re emphasis o n gro up wo rk, and a final gro up pro ject in every class was wo rth either mo st o r a large percentage o f yo ur grade. The semester also
tended to have the mo st classwo rk fo cused o n the last 2 weeks o f scho o l. At USC, mo st o f the classwo rk is usually fo cused between midterms and finals so there is no t
as much stress because o f wo rk is mo re spread o ut.

In Singapo re, there are fo ur o fficial languages: English, Chinese, Malay, and Tamil. Yo u will get by with speaking o nly English, but do n't expect everybo dy to understand
what yo u're saying.
No t necessary
Students do no t need to prepare fo r language differences in Singapo re because English is an o fficial language. Singapo reans do speak Singapo rean slang by mixing
vario us wo rds o f o ther languages and their o wn expressio ns into English into a fo rm kno wn as Singlish. Yo u will pick up much o f the mo re co mmo nly used Singlish slang
while in Singapo re. Other than picking up Singlish, Mandarin o r Tamil is helpful, but no t necessary to learn. If yo u want to learn a fo reign language in Singapo re, learn
Mandarin because it is mo re widely used in Singapo re since the majo rity o f the po pulatio n is ethnically Chinese.
Immersio n is the best metho d to learn new languages, but with few o ppo rtunities like that, do the best that yo u can with university and private classes, Ro setta Sto ne,
speaking to friends o r family that kno w o ther languages, o r any o ther metho d yo u can use to learn as much as yo u can. At least pick up a phrasebo o k so that yo u can learn
co mmo n phrases and terms needed fo r everyday life. Witho ut a lo t o f language training, yo u will always revert back to the languages yo u already kno w so do no t be to o
hard o n yo urself and expect to have so me o bstacles when co mmunicating in new languages.
