Y N Y Y N Y Y N N Discussion: 1. This course is proposed for being approved for CR GE Humanities but POLSC‐2 is being proposed as CR GE Social Sciences. Ryan Emenaker said that many other community colleges have this same course and it is in both general education categories. 2. Franz Rulofson questioned if this course was broad enough to meet the criteria for breadth and generality. John Johnston said that this course is an introductory course to a branch of Philosophy. 3. Jay Dragten said that he would find out if it’s okay to have a course listed in two general education categories. He has the question out to an articulation officer in the CSU system. He suggested tabling this proposal. 4. Marla Gleave said that since we are not sure what the CSU system will do that the committee should move forward and let the CSU decide what category this course fits. 5. Jeff Cummings also suggested moving forward and proposing this course for both categories. If it’s rejected then CR will have to figure out what it more closely matches. 6. Erik Kramer said that the point of having different categories in general education is to have students branching out from their majors. He is okay with this course being approved for only one GE status. This course can be forwarded to CSU without this having CR GE approval. Erik Kramer asked that the committee members keep that in mind as they vote whether to approve this course for GE status. Michelle Haggerty called for a vote. Discussion: Page 5 of 12 1. Erik Kramer said he doesn’t believe this course is broad enough to be approved in two different GE categories. Since PHIL‐2 was approved to fulfill the Humanities requirement, this course cannot be broad enough to also fulfill the Social Sciences GE criteria. 2. This is the same course as PHIL‐2 and will be cross listed. For the integrity of the curriculum, it’s the same course that will be held at the same time in the same classroom with the same instructor. 3. Sean Herrera‐Thomas expressed his support and applauds the authors for bringing this course to the committee. He feels with the strength of the content and excellent faculty, this course would be a win for students. He understands Erik Kramer’s concerns but feels this is an opportunity for innovation. He feels we should move forward and see what the blowback will be because we want to support this kind of curriculum innovation. 4. Erik Kramer clarified he is not against approving this course or this course having GE status. However, he is against this course having two GE statuses. The committee has to draw the line as to what is a GE course and what is not. Michelle Haggerty called for a vote. Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y ‐ With the following revisions: 1. Chris Romero wanted to propose this course for GE again for three reasons. First there are new members and they wanted those members to hear their argument and what the authors were trying to do. Secondly, because there are new members maybe they might have new idea how to address this conflict. Lastly to document that this course does in fact meet the GE standards but Page 7 of 12 2.

there is not a category to place this course. If the committee does approve this course, maybe it would be the impetus for the GE structure being changed. There are other schools that have this type of course approved as general education. They are able to do this by having a separate math requirement. Chris Romero did clarify that the intent of this course is not to circumvent the math requirement. Erik Kramer said that when this course was proposed for GE two years ago, the committee agreed that the GE structure should be modified. Chris Romero asked that it be documented that the committee found value in this course being offered as a GE course. Jeff Cummings said the Curriculum Committee can write a recommendation to the Academic Senate and they can give that to their Ad‐Hoc GE committee. 4.30 ART‐43A Intro to Digital Art ‐ Cynthia Hooper Franz Rulofson [M], Sean Herrera‐Thomas [2nd]. Y Y Y Y Y Y Y Y ‐ 5. Announcements and Open Forum 5.1 Articulation Update Page 11 of 12 This report was postponed until the January meeting. 5.2 Course Proposal Form Update Erik Kramer suggested modifying the course proposal form to include a section called course objectives. This would help in aligning our courses with C‐ID. Several proposals have been rejected by C‐ID for not include some of their course objectives in the Course Learning Outcome section of the proposal form. Outcomes are measureable while objectives are course goals. Marla Gleave suggested adding a spot on the form that allows faculty to write the C‐ID number. These changes to the form will be included as an action item on the Jan. 24th agenda. 6. Adjournment: On motion by Marla Gleave, seconded by Sean Herrera‐Thomas, the meeting was adjourned at 4:49 p.m. Next Meeting: January 24, 2014 Page 12 of 12
