Teacher Education Council Minutes April 18, 2012 Members Present: Stephanie Boss, Travis Childs, Jennifer Dennis, Becky Easley, Claudia Edwards, Courtney Glazer, Tara Grandy, Mandy Husak, Teresa Lubrano, Rachel McLain, Lynda Robinson, David Schmahl, Jan Thomas, Vivian Thomlinson, Ronna Vanderslice, Lisa Weis, and Stephanie White Proceedings Meeting called to order at 3:45 p.m. by Ronna Vanderslice Director of Teacher Education Report A. Future Teacher Scholarships in identified shortage areas: math, science, & special ed – All majors should apply. B. OSAT focus group for reading update – A statewide meeting was held and reading faculty were allowed to take the OSAT (all items used will be retired for a year). Dr. Robinson and Dr. Weis attended the meeting to represent Cameron. They both believe that our students need test-taking skills and more professional vocabulary in the area of reading beginning with the language of the competencies. The reading faculty are continuing to meet to work on our OSAT scores in Subtest 1. Although our pass rates are the same as other institutions, we will continue to work to improve them. C. Summer Institute for Character Education applications due April 25, 2012 D. PARCC/Common Core update – Ideally the two organizations will compete and then come together to use the best assessments. Becky Easley attended the most recent state department meeting about the common core. Questions still remain about scoring the open-ended questions – whether computer programs will be used or professional, human scorers. An additional local concern is about the technology infrastructure required to support the new assessments. Pearson will provide two assessments during the year with two optional ones that may be used for benchmarking. The assumption is that if students pass these assessments then they will be considered college-ready. The impact here at Cameron will be that remediation won’t be provided for students who pass the assessment and come straight to college. E. InTASC standards adopted by OCTP – A timeline for full implementation is being developed. This will impact the education portfolio. The education faculty have been working on the new standards and are revising/developing assignments to meet them for the portfolio. It is particularly important for those programs who use the portfolio as one of their key assessments to stay informed of the changes as they are made. F. Clinical Alliance – Oklahoma has joined approximately 14 other states that are seeking to improve clinical experiences. The alliance is meant to be a state-level reform movement but with the flexibility to meet local needs. Cameron has attended two in-state meetings as discussions are beginning. At the last meeting, a LPS principal and candidate currently in our program attended with Dr. Glazer and Dr. Vanderslice. G. School Report Card – All reports indicate it will be hard for schools to earn an A or B. The grades do not appear to be normally distributed. Our message to the schools will be to ask what we can do to help. H. RSU Update: Social Studies and English programs – Articulation agreements are still being developed and will have to be approved by Provosts on both campuses. The only change that we will see at the RSU campus is that Dr. Holloway and Dr. Weis will have secondary students in some professional education classes. On May 9, Travis Childs and Lance Janda are going to Claremore to discuss the RSU faculty administering key assessments in their classes. Most of the classes will be online, and Travis will teach the methods. Last month’s meeting minutes were approved. Other Business Old Business 1.
