General Education Report General Education Test Results (CCTST 2000) AY 2010 - 11 OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS, PLANNING AND RESEARCH AUGUST 2011 www.mtsu.edu/iepr// Table of Contents General Education Test Results (CCTST 2000) Middle Tennessee State University AY 2010-11 Table of Contents i Executive Summary ii Average Total Scores: College, University & National 3 Summary by College and Major AY 2010 - 11 4 Comparison by College and Year (graphs) 11 Percentage of Students Proficient at Each Skill Level (Subscores Graph) 12 i A Report from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Planning, and Research August, 2011 Middle Tennessee State University General Education Exit Exam 2010-11 Results Executive Summary MTSU seniors exceeded the national average score on the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) for the fourth consecutive year. The CCTST is MTSU’s chosen instrument to assess general education as required by the Tennessee Performance Funding program. Fall 2007 was the first official administration of the CCTST at MTSU, following a two-year pilot of the test. The CCTST requires students to draw inferences, make interpretations, analyze information, draw warranted inferences, identify claims and reasons, and to evaluate the quality of arguments using brief passages, diagrams and charts. In summary, the 17.0 average Total Score for seniors tested was above the 16.8 national average. MTSU will receive the maximum 15 points for this Performance Funding standard. MTSU’s average Total Score was 17.0 compared to the national average of 16.8. The CCTST, unlike the Educational Testing Service's (ETS) general education exams used in the past, provides five subscores for individual students in addition to the Total Score. Subscores for deductive and inductive reasoning, as well as the skills of analysis, evaluation and inference are included in this report. This additional information provides a better tool for departmental faculty to plan and implement actions intended to improve students' abilities and scores in the tested areas. Scores for students with multiple majors are counted in each major officially declared by the student. Readers of the report are urged to read all notes printed at the bottom of the tables for further clarification. The 2010-11 results equate to 15 points - the maximum for general education assessment in the Performance Funding program. According to THEC's schedule, institutions will be notified of the total points awarded in mid-December. ii General Education Test Results 2010 - 11 Summary by College Degrees Conferred % Tested Mean Std Dev Median Min Max Analysis Range: 0-7 Deduction Range: 0 - 17 Evaluatio n Range: 0 - 11 Induction Range: 0 - 17 Inference Range: 0-16 College Basic and Applied Sciences Behavioral and Health Sciences Business Education Liberal Arts Mass Communication University College MTSU - All Students No. Tested Middle Tennessee State University Subscores 564 739 569 273 562 460 267 3,426 619 833 643 283 652 490 348 3,868 91.1% 88.7% 88.5% 96.5% 86.2% 93.9% 76.7% 88.6% 17.9 16.4 17.1 15.4 17.8 17.1 16.3 17.0 5.3 4.5 4.8 3.9 4.9 4.8 4.8 4.8 17 16 17 15 18 17 17 17 3 3 5 6 4 3 5 3 30 29 30 30 33 29 32 33 4.5 4.5 4.4 4.4 4.7 4.6 4.5 4.5 7.8 6.8 7.3 6.2 7.6 7.2 6.5 7.2 5.0 4.4 4.5 4.2 5.1 4.9 4.6 4.7 10.1 9.6 9.8 9.2 10.2 9.9 9.8 9.8 8.4 7.5 8.2 6.8 8.0 7.7 7.2 7.8 Average Total Scores: College, University & National CCTST Score Range: 0 - 34 College 2007-08 2008-09 2009-10 2010-11 Basic and Applied Sciences Business Education and Behavioral Sci Liberal Arts Mass Communication University College Behavioral and Health Sciences Education MTSU - All Students Tested 18.9 17.3 16.8 18.3 18.1 16.4 − − 17.7 19.1 17.7 16.7 18.8 18.5 17.2 − − 18.0 18.5 17.0 16.1 18.1 17.4 16.9 − − 17.3 17.9 17.1 − 17.8 17.1 16.3 16.4 15.4 17 National 16.8 16.8 16.8 16.8 Note: Students with dual degrees are counted once in each college that offers one of their degrees, which creates duplicated counts.
