The CCTST was MTSU’s chosen instrument to assess general education as required by the Tennessee Performance Funding (PF) program. Fall 2007 was the first official administration of the CCTST at MTSU, following a two-year pilot of the test. The CCTST requires students to draw inferences, make interpretations, analyze information, draw warranted inferences, identify claims and reasons, and to evaluate the quality of arguments using brief passages, diagrams and charts. In summary, the 17.7 average Total Score exceeded the 16.8 national average. MTSU will receive the maximum15 points for this Performance Funding standard for the first time since AY 2000-2001. MTSU’s average Total Score was 17.7 compared to the national average of 16.8. The CCTST, unlike the Educational Testing Service's (ETS) general education exams used in the past, provides five subscores for individual students in addition to the Total Score. MTSU subscore means exceeded national means in each category. Subscores for deductive and inductive reasoning, as well as the skills of analysis, evaluation and inference are included in all tables within this report. The most often heard complaint about the ETS exams was the unavailability of individual subscores, which prevented subscore reporting by major. Without this deeper kind of feedback from the testing of their students, departments found it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to plan and implement actions intended to increase students' abilities and scores in the tested areas. The additional information gained from the CCTST provides a better tool for departmental faculty to address the areas of concern for their majors. In the past, some departments had expressed concern that test results for students with double majors were only counted in one major. For this year's report, students are counted in each of their majors. It is hoped that this procedure will provide departments with improved data with which to evaluate their graduates' critical thinking skills and also the major's curriculum. The 2007-08 results equate to 15 points in the state's Performance Funding program. Each point resulted in an additional $67,715 in state funding for MTSU's 2006-07 PF results, and the amount will likely increase for the 2007-08 report. According to THEC's schedule, institutions will be notified of the total points awarded by mid-December. The dollar value of the points may not be known until spring, 2009. ii Summary by College General Education Test Results (CCTST 2000) Middle Tennessee State University AY 2007 - 08 No. Tested Graduates % Tested Mean Range: 1 - 32 Std Dev Median Min Max Analysis Range: 0 - 7 Deduction Range: 0 - 16 Evaluation Range: 0 - 11 Induction Range: 0 - 17 Inference Range: 0-15 Subscores Basic and Applied Sciences 589 656 89.8% 18.9 5.1 19 6 33 4.8 8.5 5.2 10.4 9.0 Business 665 683 97.4% 17.3 4.8 17 5 30 4.4 7.6 4.5 9.7 8.3 Education and Behavioral Sci 789 775 101.8% 16.8 4.6 16 6 31 4.4 7.3 4.5 9.5 7.9 Liberal Arts 586 665 88.1% 18.3 5.0 18 5 32 4.7 8.0 5.2 10.3 8.3 Mass Communication 534 557 95.9% 18.1 5.0 18 4 32 4.7 8.0 5.2 10.2 8.3 Cont Educ & Distance Learning 170 215 79.1% 16.4 4.7 16 5 30 4.4 6.7 4.7 9.7 7.3 MTSU - All Students Tested 3,311 3,551 93.2% 17.7 4.9 18 4 33 4.6 7.8 4.9 10.0 8.3 College Average Total Scores: College, University & National CCTST Score Range: 0 - 34 MAPP Score Range: 400 - 500 College 2002-03 2003-04 2004-05 2005-06 2006-07 2007-08 Basic & Applied Sciences 452.10 452.66 451.77 451.12 449.81 18.9 Business 448.99 448.72 447.61 447.77 443.23 17.3 Education & Behavioral Science 446.28 445.50 444.85 445.29 443.97 16.8 Liberal Arts 452.49 452.34 449.93 452.07 450.28 18.3 Mass Communication 452.17 452.27 450.95 451.05 448.11 18.1 16.4 Continuing Education & Distance Learning 450.15 449.95 446.24 446.50 444.89 MTSU - All Students Tested 449.88 449.98 448.71 449.09 446.83 17.7 National 450.76 450.40 450.40 451.84 451.31 16.8 Note: Students with multiple majors are counted once in each college that offers one of their majors, which creates duplicated counts.
