The CCTST was MTSU’s chosen instrument to assess general education as required by the Tennessee Performance Funding program. Fall 2007 was the first official administration of the CCTST at MTSU, following a two-year pilot of the test. The CCTST requires students to draw inferences, make interpretations, analyze information, draw warranted inferences, identify claims and reasons, and to evaluate the quality of arguments using brief passages, diagrams and charts. In summary, the 18.0 average Total Score for seniors tested was above the 16.8 national average . MTSU will receive the maximum 15 points for this Performance Funding standard. MTSU’s average Total Score was 18.0 compared to the national average of 16.8. The CCTST, unlike the Educational Testing Service's (ETS) general education exams used in the past, provides five subscores for individual students in addition to the Total Score. Subscores for deductive and inductive reasoning, as well as the skills of analysis, evaluation and inference are included in all tables within this report. The most often heard complaint about the ETS exams was the unavailability of individual subscores, which prevented subscore reporting by major. Without this deeper kind of feedback from the testing of their students, departments found it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to plan and implement actions intended to increase students' abilities and scores in the tested areas. The additional information gained from the CCTST provides a better tool for departmental faculty to address areas of concern for their majors. Previous concerns regarding test scores for double majors are also addressed in this report. Scores for students with multiple majors are counted in each major officially declared by the student. Readers of the report are urged to read all notes printed at the bottom of the tables for further clarification. The 2008-09 results equate to 15 points - the maximum for general education assessment in the Performance Funding program. According to THEC's schedule, institutions will be notified of the total points awarded in mid-December. ii Summary by College General Education Test Results (CCTST 2000) Middle Tennessee State University AY 2008 - 09 No. Tested Graduates % Tested Mean Std Dev Median Min Max Analysis Range: 0 - 7 Deduction Range: 0 - 17 Evaluation Range: 0 - 11 Induction Range: 0 - 17 Inference Range: 0-16 Subscores Basic and Applied Sciences 693 779 89.0% 19.1 4.9 19 6 32 4.8 8.5 5.2 10.6 9.1 Business 709 751 94.4% 17.7 4.6 18 6 31 4.5 7.8 4.7 9.9 8.6 Education and Behavioral Science 751 820 91.6% 16.7 4.6 16 4 32 4.4 7.0 4.6 9.7 7.7 Liberal Arts 583 614 95.0% 18.8 5.0 19 8 31 4.9 8.2 5.4 10.6 8.5 Mass Communication 502 533 94.2% 18.5 4.8 18 5 29 4.7 8.0 5.2 10.4 8.6 Cont Educ & Distance Learning 207 293 70.6% 17.2 4.9 17 7 31 4.7 7.3 4.6 10.0 7.9 MTSU - All Students Tested 3,435 3,790 90.6% 18.0 4.9 18 4 32 4.6 7.8 5.0 10.2 8.4 College Average Total Scores: College, University & National MAPP Score Range: 400 - 500 College CCTST Score Range: 0 - 34 2004-05 2005-06 Basic & Applied Sciences 2006-07 2007-08 2008-09 451.77 Business 447.61 451.12 449.81 18.9 19.1 447.77 443.23 17.3 Education & Behavioral Science 17.7 Liberal Arts 444.85 445.29 443.97 16.8 16.7 449.93 452.07 450.28 18.3 Mass Communication 18.8 450.95 451.05 448.11 18.1 18.5 Continuing Education & Distance Learning 446.24 446.50 444.89 16.4 17.2 MTSU - All Students Tested 448.71 449.09 446.83 17.7 18.0 National 450.40 451.84 451.31 16.8 16.8 Notes: Students with multiple majors are counted once in each college that offers one of their majors, which creates duplicated counts.
