A Report from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Planning, and Research
August, 2010
Middle Tennessee State University
General Education Exit Exam
2009-10 Results
Executive Summary
MTSU seniors exceeded the national average score on the California Critical Thinking
Skills Test (CCTST) for the third consecutive year. The CCTST is MTSU’s chosen
instrument to assess general education as required by the Tennessee Performance Funding
program. Fall 2007 was the first official administration of the CCTST at MTSU, following
a two-year pilot of the test. The CCTST requires students to draw inferences, make
interpretations, analyze information, draw warranted inferences, identify claims and
reasons, and to evaluate the quality of arguments using brief passages, diagrams and charts.
In summary, the 17.3 average Total Score for seniors tested was above
the 16.8 national average. MTSU will receive the maximum 15 points
for this Performance Funding standard.
MTSU’s average Total Score was 17.3 compared to the national average of 16.8. The
CCTST, unlike the Educational Testing Service's (ETS) general education exams used in
the past, provides five subscores for individual students in addition to the Total Score.
Subscores for deductive and inductive reasoning, as well as the skills of analysis,
evaluation and inference are included in this report.
The most often heard complaint about the ETS exams was the unavailability of individual
subscores, which prevented subscore reporting by major. The additional information
gained from the CCTST provides a better tool for departmental faculty to plan and
implement actions intended to improve students' abilities and scores in the tested areas.
Previous concerns regarding test scores for double majors are also addressed in this report.
Scores for students with multiple majors are counted in each major officially declared by
the student. Readers of the report are urged to read all notes printed at the bottom of the
tables for further clarification.
The 2009-10 results equate to 15 points - the maximum for general education assessment in
the Performance Funding program. According to THEC's schedule, institutions will be
notified of the total program points awarded in mid-December.
