General Education Report General Education Test Results (CCTST 2000) Middle Tennessee State University AY 2009 - 10 Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Planning, and Research August 2010 www.mtsu.edu/~iepr Table of Contents General Education Test Results (CCTST 2000) Middle Tennessee State University AY 2009 - 10 Table of Contents i Executive Summary ii Average Total Scores: College, University & National 3 Summary by College and Major AY2009-10 4 Comparison by College and Year (graphs) 10 Percentage of Students Proficient at Each Skill Level (Subscores Graph) 11 i A Report from the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Planning, and Research August, 2010 Middle Tennessee State University General Education Exit Exam 2009-10 Results Executive Summary MTSU seniors exceeded the national average score on the California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) for the third consecutive year. The CCTST is MTSU’s chosen instrument to assess general education as required by the Tennessee Performance Funding program. Fall 2007 was the first official administration of the CCTST at MTSU, following a two-year pilot of the test. The CCTST requires students to draw inferences, make interpretations, analyze information, draw warranted inferences, identify claims and reasons, and to evaluate the quality of arguments using brief passages, diagrams and charts. In summary, the 17.3 average Total Score for seniors tested was above the 16.8 national average. MTSU will receive the maximum 15 points for this Performance Funding standard. MTSU’s average Total Score was 17.3 compared to the national average of 16.8. The CCTST, unlike the Educational Testing Service's (ETS) general education exams used in the past, provides five subscores for individual students in addition to the Total Score. Subscores for deductive and inductive reasoning, as well as the skills of analysis, evaluation and inference are included in this report. The most often heard complaint about the ETS exams was the unavailability of individual subscores, which prevented subscore reporting by major. The additional information gained from the CCTST provides a better tool for departmental faculty to plan and implement actions intended to improve students' abilities and scores in the tested areas. Previous concerns regarding test scores for double majors are also addressed in this report. Scores for students with multiple majors are counted in each major officially declared by the student. Readers of the report are urged to read all notes printed at the bottom of the tables for further clarification. The 2009-10 results equate to 15 points - the maximum for general education assessment in the Performance Funding program. According to THEC's schedule, institutions will be notified of the total program points awarded in mid-December. ii Summary by College General Education Test Results (CCTST 2000) Middle Tennessee State University AY 2009 - 10 College No. Tested Graduates % Tested Mean Std Dev Median Min Max Analysis Range: 0 - 7 Deduction Range: 0 - 17 Evaluation Range: 0 - 11 Induction Range: 0 - 17 Inference Range: 0-16 Subscores Basic and Applied Sciences 638 719 88.7% 18.5 4.8 18 6 31 4.7 8.1 5.1 10.3 8.7 Business 646 684 94.4% 17.0 4.8 17 5 30 4.4 7.4 4.4 9.6 8.2 Education and Behavioral Sci 784 832 94.2% 16.1 4.5 16 6 32 4.4 6.7 4.4 9.4 7.3 Liberal Arts 585 638 91.7% 18.1 4.9 18 3 33 4.8 7.6 5.3 10.5 8.0 Mass Communication 431 460 93.7% 17.4 4.6 17 4 30 4.7 7.5 4.8 9.9 7.9 Cont Educ & Distance Learning 212 296 71.6% 16.9 4.7 17 4 31 4.6 7.0 4.6 9.9 7.7 3,287 3,629 90.6% 17.3 4.8 17 3 33 4.6 7.4 4.7 9.9 8.0 MTSU - All Students Tested Average Total Scores: College, University & National College MAPP Score Range: 400 - 500 CCTST Score Range: 0 - 34 2007-08 2008-09 2009-10 Basic and Applied Sciences 451.12 449.81 18.9 19.1 18.5 Business 447.77 443.23 17.3 17.7 17.0 Education and Behavioral Sci 445.29 443.97 16.8 16.7 16.1 Liberal Arts 452.07 450.28 18.3 18.8 18.1 Mass Communication 451.05 448.11 18.1 18.5 17.4 Cont Educ & Distance Learning 446.50 444.89 16.4 17.2 16.9 MTSU - All Students Tested 449.09 446.83 17.7 18.0 17.3 National 451.84 451.31 16.8 16.8 16.8 Note: Students with dual degrees are counted once in each college that offers one of their degrees, which creates duplicated counts.
