Keynote Speaker Innovative, Committed and Inspired: 175 Years of Public Education in NC James E. Ford is the 2012-2013 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Teacher of the Year, 2013-2014 Southwest Regional Teacher of the Year, and 2014-2015 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year. He currently teaches World History at Garinger High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. When asked about his teaching philosophy, Ford explains, “For me, teaching is so much more than simply a job. It is a calling, connected to a much greater life purpose. There is nothing like the satisfaction of knowing exactly what you were put on earth to do. Whatever gifts or talents I may possess are merely tools that accompany my passion to change lives. If my students have learned nothing else from me, my hope is that they now understand the value they all carry and the life-changing potential of a quality education. Unlike my former self, I now comprehend the true relevance of academics and just how much it does relate to “real life”. My task is attempting to impart this revelation to each and every one of my students, one lesson at a time.” Professional Learning Day October 17, 2014 8:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m. Room 162 Sponsored by: UNCW Watson College of Education Professional Development System Office A GENDA 8:00–8:30AM Registration and Breakfast 8:30–8:45 Welcome and Overview of the Day Ms. Somer Lewis, Director Professional Development System EB 162 11:00AM-12:00PM Session B2: Gathering Data with Vernier Probeware!
