'The tail of China is large and will not be wagged'.
This course will focus on how China, the country with the world’s largest population and one of its longest
continuous histories, has encountered the world since the 17th century. Its emphasis will be on the late 19th
and 20th centuries, and it is intended to illuminate how China has emerged as a major power in the 21st
century. China’s external relations and foreign policy will be examined in the context of its political, economic,
social and cultural developments in broader terms. The course also aims to cultivate a basic understanding of
the Chinese experience in the age of globalization and worldwide modernization.
