Shining Up the Brass
Library assistant Pam McNamara (above) and more
than 20 of the 560 COD Cares Action Heroes spent a
day shining brass, conditioning leather and dusting off
antique carriages, among other activities, at a recent
visit to St. James Farm in Warrenville. The volunteers
completed tasks throughout the 600-acre farm and
received rave reviews from the DuPage County Forest

Vivian Maier Exhibit Opening
Guests enjoy the first viewings of photographs by Vivian
Maier during the opening reception of "Vivian Maier:
Exposed" at the Cleve Carney Art Gallery at the
McAninch Arts Center. The exhibit runs through
Saturday, Aug. 16, and features a number of images by
the late artist. Born in New York City in 1926, Maier
produced more than 100,000 negatives during her life, but
showed them to very few people. Her work remained
unknown until its discovery in 2007, only one year after
her death. Since then, Maier's photos have ignited
passion and enthusiasm in photography buffs and art
enthusiasts alike worldwide. Click here for more images

Three COD students are
participating in
prestigious summer
chemistry research
internships thanks to a
grant through the College Foundation’s Resource for
Excellence program. Ruth Groza (left) is working with
Professor Marjorie Jones at Illinois State University, Taylor
Holland (center) is with Anna Pla-Dalmau, Ph.D., at
Fermilab, and Jeffrey Hosmer is with Professor Graham
Peaslee at Hope College. The Resource for Excellence
Grant program fosters innovation at COD by providing
funding to test new ideas, pilot new programs or methods, or
conduct research. Gary Roby, Assistant Professor of
Chemistry, said he interviewed full-time students who had
taken either biochemistry or organic chemistry, had an
interest in research and possessed strong lab skills. “These
internship opportunities are rarely available to community
colleges, yet our students are eager and ready to meet the
challenge,” Roby said. Read more.
