THE CARPENTER CHRONICLES
Language:
We finished the chapter
book Lulu’s Mysterious
Mission. We wrote a
response in our Reading
Journals. We were assigned
parts in the fairy tale
Reader’s Theaters. We
practiced reading with our
group. Next week we will
design puppets for our
characters. We started a
new word study unit on the
short and long vowel
sounds of “u”. We
continued to write original
poems. We chose one of
our favorites to put in a
1
class poem book. We will
each get our own copy.
Mathematics:
This week we have
spent a lot of time working
on addition and
subtraction strategies.
Some of these include
using a related number
sentence (4 + 6 helps solve
10 - 6), counting backwards
(12 - 2), drawing a picture
to represent something
taken away, using a 100
chart (23 - 15: 23 - 10 =
13, then 13 - 5 = 8). We
worked on solving
challenging story problems.
We are learning to read
carefully what the problem
is asking us to do. We are
working on slowing down
and using think and “wait
time” before giving an
answer!!!
Content:
We spent most of the
week designing and
building our amazing
Marble Mazes. We gave
them a name, and then we
spent time trying out all the
mazes! We charted our
many observations.
