April 15 , 2016 THE CARPENTER CHRONICLES Language: We finished reading My Father’s Dragon and wrote a book response. Then we voted on our next chapter book read aloud, and we chose Lulu’s Mysterious Mission. (This is the 3rd book in the Lulu series.) We read Reader’s Theaters in small groups to work on fluency. We sorted pictures and words with the short and long vowel sounds of o. We continued to choose our own writing topics and type of writing. Our choices include: Narrative, 1 Opinion, How To, Informational, and Digital. We continued to work on adding details and proofreading for punctuation and spelling. Mathematics: Our math focus this week was measurement. We read the book Measuring Penny, and we charted all the ways people measure things in every day life. We designed our own pets using various rectangles and squares. We measured body parts of our pet using cubes and inches. We also worked with a partner this week to measure ourselves. Content: We read the book Iggy Peck, Architect. We also read the book Gravity. We worked with a small group to build structures using various materials in our classroom. Mrs. Carpenter measured each structure, and we charted it. Then we switched materials. We learned to use different strategies with different materials.
