April 22 , 2016 THE CARPENTER CHRONICLES Language: We are loving Lulu’s new adventure Lulu’s Mysterious Mission. We are making predictions before each new chapter. We enjoyed working on various Reader’s Theaters in small groups. Mrs. Carpenter will be assigning characters to us next week. We have been reading poems from a variety of poetry books. We wrote a self-portrait poem, and Mrs. Carpenter taught us how to use wordle.net to turn our poem into a word picture. We can access this 1 through Mrs. Carpenter’s webpage. We helped Mrs. Carpenter write a poem about First Grade, and we have written several original poems and shared them with our classmates. Mathematics: We focused a lot on adding and subtracting strategies this week. We played several math games to give us a lot of practice. We are also looking at different ways to add two digit numbers to multiples of ten, examples: 43 + 30, 56 + 20. We can add the numbers in the tens place using mental math or find one number on the 100 chart and count on by tens. Content: We read the book Rosie Revere, Engineer. We talked about making mistakes, but not giving up. We watched a few videos of homemade marble mazes and marble runs. We are designing our own mazes in a small group using recycled materials that Mrs. Carpenter has gathered over the past few months.
