News From Mrs. Rowe and Mr. Miller We have had a great week this week! Routines are settling into place and we are really diving into growing ourselves as readers, writers, mathematicians, and scientists. The money system is up and running. Kids seem to be enjoying themselves. Mr. Miller and Mrs. Rowe will be selling next Friday. We also enjoyed seeing many of you at the Chimney Swifts gathering on Tuesday night! Mrs. Angela Rowe & Mr. Dave Miller September 18, 2015 Reading & Writing Workshop In reading workshop this week, we focused our time on how to talk to others about books we are reading. In these conversations, we started to work on giving a complete summary of what we had read to our peers. In writing workshop this week, students were assigned a writing partner for the school year. We continued to draft narratives and met with Math Workshop This week in math we discussed estimating using mental math. We worked with compatible numbers and rounding to come to an answer close to the actual when solving with decimals. Our next focus will be with adding and subtracting numbers with decimals. our writing partners. In these meetings, students were given suggestions and support from their peers to help improve their writing. We will be using these partners often as we continue to grow as writers. Word Study In word study, we started a unit working with Greek and Latin roots. Our current focus is on words with aqua and hydra present. These roots mean water. Science Important Dates to Know This week in science we studied Tues., Sept. 22: Newberry Club Meeting interactions between the sun, Earth, and Wed., Sept. 23: Family Night – No moon and how they affect day and night and the sessions. On September 17, we paused to learn about Constitution day. A scientific heads up, on September 27 there will be unique opportunity to see a Super moon and lunar eclipse.
