Second Grade News Friday October 23, 2015 Oct. 21 - 28 - Usborne Book Fair Oct. 22 & Oct. 28 - Conference Night Oct. 29 - Fall Harvest Party Oct. 30 - No School Reading/Writing Workshop This week students were able to use helpful words to visualize what the author wanted us to "see" when we were reading a fun poem, My Neighbor’s Dog is Purple by Jack Prelusky. New Reading Logs were sent home on Wednesday. Our school goal is for all of us to read 20 minutes every day. Students also began informative writing. We are making connections to when we read nonfiction books. We have a terrific start with our research about fall topics that are interesting to us. Our final projects will be a 6-page booklet complete with a Table of Contents, Captions, Bold Print, and Glossary. Math This week in math we began looking at place value. Students started the unit off by creating their initial using tens and ones blocks. They are working with 2-3 digit numbers. Students ordered 3 digit numbers from least to greatest and enjoyed a few math games that allowed them to explore with 3 digit numbers. We also are working on writing our numbers in expanded form. Next week, we will be begin adding two digit numbers. This concept can be very tricky for students. Please try and review any worksheets that your child may bring home from their in class work. There will be a math test next Thursday, Oct. 29th. Word Study Second graders practiced their spelling words this week with various activities. These activities included: Graph a Word, 5-Box Practice, Word Search, and Look, Say, Cover, Check. Today, students also completed their spelling test. Students not only had to spell their 12 spelling words correctly but they also had to write a sentence dictation. Students were graded on correct spelling of the spelling word, correct capitalization, correct spaces, and correct punctuation. Please check Progress Book for grades! Social Studies This week students began a new unit on Weather. Students begin the week by exploring and learning different weather tools (weather vane, rain gauge, anemometer, thermometer, and barometer). We then read three lessons from our science book, “How Weather Changes”, “Why Do We Measure Weather,” and “What is a Water Cycle?” Next week, we will begin tracking the weather by starting a weather journal. We will be observing seasonal changes that occur all year long.
