Together we learn, together we succeed, and together we will make a positive difference! Second Grade News Friday October 9, 2015 Oct. 20 Fall Picture Make-up Oct. 12 - Dec. 2 - Yoplait Pink Lid Collection Oct. 21 - 28 - Usborne Book Fair Reading/Writing Workshop We have been adding more “hats” to our reading rack this week. Students have had guided lessons about predicting, inferring, visualizing, questioning, and clarifying. We have been practicing what good readers do before we engage with a title, during our focused reading time, and after we completed the text. Written responses to what we have read are also part of our weekly routine. Students completed putting final touches on a personal narrative story. This project was completed with little to no assistance from the teacher. We will use this as a fall assessment. Next week we will begin informative writing projects. Math Students began working with money! The students love learning about money and have enjoyed playing a variety of games to help them understand their value. Students are to know the identity and value of a penny, nickel, dime and quarter. They are also learning how to add money and have discovered starting with the larger coin first makes adding money easier. Please continue to work with your child at home. This can be a very tricky concept and students often need lots of practice. We will return back to money next trimester! Social Studies - This week students learned about Habit #4 Think Win-Win and Habit #5 Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood. We completed many activities in our Leader in Me Workbooks to reinforce these habits. We also read The Rainbow Fish and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs to discuss how the characters used Habit #4 and #5. We ended the week by introducing Habit #6 Synergize. We will continue learning about this habit next week. Word Study- Second graders practiced their spelling words this week with various activities. These activities included: Graph a Word, 5-Box Practice, Word Search, and Look, Say, Cover, Check. Today, the students completed their first spelling test. Students not only had to spell their 12 spelling words correctly but they also had to write a sentence dictation. Students were graded on correct spelling of the spelling word, correct capitalization, correct spaces, and correct punctuation. Please check Progress Book for grades!
