Together we learn, together we succeed, and together we will make a positive difference! Second Grade News Nov.11- Veteran’s Day Friday November 6, 2015 Nov.12 - End of first trimester Nov. 13 - NO SCHOOL - Teacher workday Reading/Writing Workshop Making connections to what we read is a vital aspect to the learning process. We reviewed the many types of links we make with the titles- Text to Self, Text to Text, and Text to World. We also introduced the importance of questioning. We used the terms “thin and thick” to basically categorize the types of questions. “Thin” questions are those that skim the surface of basic understanding and comprehension and “Thick” questions are those with more detail and require more thinking. Both types are important to fully understand what we read. Students also had the opportunity to put final touches on their 6-page book of facts ( Fall topic report) connecting what we learned about nonfiction text features. The students were on task with partner research as well as editing . Math In math this week we focused on double digit addition. The students began learning how to regroup. This is a very tricky concept and it requires a lot of practice. The students used base ten blocks to visually see why we need to regroup. We then moved into doing math problems with paper and pencil. Please continue to work on this with your child. We will be moving onto subtraction next week. We will return to double digit addition and subtraction throughout the year for continuous review. Word Study Second graders practiced their spelling words this week with various activities. These activities included: Graph a Word, 5-Box Practice, Word Search, and Look, Say, Cover, Check. Today, students also completed their spelling test. Students not only had to spell their 12 spelling words correctly but they also had to write a sentence dictation. Students were graded on correct spelling of the spelling word, correct capitalization, correct spaces, and correct punctuation. Please check Progress Book for grades! Social Studies Students participated in Election Day Popcorn Voting! We began by filling out our voter registration card and then students voted if butter, cheese, or caramel popcorn was their favorite. We counted the votes, graphed our data, and answered comprehension questions about the data we collected. We also enjoyed eating the delicious popcorn! Science- This week students enjoyed tracking the weather in their weather journal. Students drew a picture of the weather, recorded the temperature, wind speed, what type of clouds they observed, what it looked liked, and what it felt like outside. Students recorded this data both in the morning and in the afternoon to observe changes in the weather.
