The Social Science subcommittee reviewed and approved a course in the fall that was missing from the summary and consequently did not get recorded as approved. The Committee confirmed the approval for a one-time-only social science designation for EDLD 291, Special Topics in Educational Leadership: Leadership for a Diverse World. The review of CHEM 302 for Ethics is underway. This course was not submitted during the rolling review cycle because the faculty member was out of the country. The total number of forms submitted for the rolling review will be confirmed at the next meeting. According to the catalog there are 52 Historical and Cultural Courses, 36 Natural Science with a lab, 27 without a lab, and 7 math courses plus two exams. Business Items Chair White summarized what is involved in the rolling review. She asked that reviewers determine (1) whether the course meets the established criteria and learning goals, (2) where the course might fit within the MUS Core, and (3) whether the criteria need to be revised. Camie will send members reference information for the MUS Core as well as create a folder on the Moodle site. The Committee will need to revise the list of UM courses that fulfill the MUS Core. Subcommittee chairs are welcome to recruit additional members to assist in the review. The workload can be distributed amongst the members as well. Camie will send a message to the Chair of Chemistry and Physics to request volunteers to review the science forms. The subcommittee chair’s agreed to present their lists of approvals, non-approvals, and items for further discussion on the following dates. The committee did not think it was necessary to get enrollment numbers, but would like to review the dormant course report. Historical and Cultural Studies Mathematics Science Linda Frey Sue Bradford Frank Rosenzweig 3/27/13 3/13/13 4/10/13 The workgroup studying the criteria of the Indigenous and Global (X) and American and European (Y) perspectives gathered input from faculty involved in creating the criteria and will discuss whether these can be revised for clarity. Hopefully it will have a recommendation for the next meeting. Professor Calderon indicated that pre-med students are having difficulty getting into medical schools that have a diversity requirement. She was asked to bring how these schools define the requirement. Members should review the information on Moodle and think about a possible incentive approach to a language requirement for discussion at the next meeting. Good and Welfare Professor Ausland urged the committee to be careful about the Western (Indigenous and Global) / Non-western (American and European) debate. Creating contention about the issue will not be helpful to students. The Committee needs to be academic in its recommendation. The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
