Subcommittee Chairs and members were assigned to General Education Groups (below).
Each form should be reviewed by 2 to 4 faculty members. Reviewers should be solicited
from instructors that teach courses in the appropriate general education group. Members
will be sent the applicable procedures. Please contact either Chair White (available until
October 17th) or Camie with questions. Subcommittee chairs may contact the proposers
with questions for clarity. Significant concerns should be discussed with the full committee.
Subcommittee Chairs should be prepared with a list of courses for approval and those for
discussion at the October 31st meeting. Also consider whether the group criteria and
learning goals are still appropriate and align with the University’s strategic plan.

Committee members will be sent background information regarding the foreign language /
symbolic systems debate. Chair White looked at other universities’ approach to the issue
and prepared a primer for the discussion. These items will be sent as well. By chance she
ran across a 1967 Kiamin article describing contention over the language requirement. Last
year ASCRC did not approve the motion forwarded by the General Education Committee.
Effective autumn semester of 2014, undergraduates must fulfill the general education
modern and classical language requirement unless enrolled in a program of study
requiring more than 48 credits leading to a first baccalaureate degree. Credits for the
program of study include all requirements for the primary major including options
and designated pre-requisite courses, excluding general education courses unless
required by the major.
It would rather see an incentive approach available to all students. The General Education
Committee could decide that it would like ASCRC to reconsider the motion.
The meeting was adjourned at 5: 00 PM.
