GENERAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE MINUTES, 10/15/14 CALL TO ORDER / ROLL CALL Members present: S. Bradford, L. Calderon S. Caro, M Cracolice, R. Fanning, N. McCrady, J. Randall, T. Shearer, T. Squires, S. Bradford, L. Calderon, N. Lindsay, K. Reiser, G. Weix Ex-officio Members present: B. Howard, N. Lindsay Members Absent/ Excused: K. Huthaily Minutes: The minutes from 10/1/14 were approved. COMMUNICATION Heather Bruce, the Diversity Advisory Committee Co-Chair will attend the next meeting to discuss the information that was in the Kaimen Article. The article suggests that a new general education diversity requirement would be implemented next fall. Such a proposal would require thorough review by the Committee and approval by the Faculty Senate. This could not happen in time for next fall. BUSINESS ITEMS The Committee adopted the four group workload breakdown below. Subcommittee Chairs may contact proposers for follow-up or send a communication to Chair Caro identifying items that need to be discussed by the full committee. The Committee only has one meeting in November, so will need to assess progress to determine whether another meeting should be added to the schedule. The Committee discussed the frequency of the rolling review of general education courses. A review seems unnecessary for courses taught by the same professor with the same learning goals. An option could be added to the form so professors only need to complete the assessment section, if the course is taught by the same faculty member as the last review with no subsequent changes to the syllabus. The committee should only create work and engage in work that is meaningful. The revised assessable draft form will be distributed to members for comment prior to the next meeting. Both faculty and students are alienated from general education. They don’t really know what the designations mean. Assessment Pilot Workgroup has sent an initial communication to Science and Math Department Chairs to alert them to the upcoming pilot. Departments should already be collecting data for departmental assessment plans. The Workgroup has not yet targeted faculty/courses to participate. It may be necessary to contact individual faculty by phone. Camie will ask for enrollment numbers for the courses to identify key courses. A copy of the communication will be sent to committee members as well. GOOD AND WELFARE Professor Weix asked about general education courses offered online and whether it was possible for students to take all their general education courses online. The committee may need to investigate where there are gaps and encourage departments to offer online sections. This could be marketed to students if available. Camie will ask the School of Extended and Online Learning for the data. Beth Howard asked whether it was possible for a yearly general education update be sent to advisors. Camie will work on something. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 5:10p.m.
