Chabot College Fall 2001 Replaced Fall 2010 Course Outline for Physical Education 4 BASIC HEART RATE TRAINING: FITNESS TRAINING USING A HEART RATE MONITOR Catalog Description: PHED 4 – Basic Heart Rate Training: Fitness Training Using a Heart Rate Monitor May be repeated 3 times. 1 Unit Students learn how to improve fitness utilizing pulse and a heart rate monitor. They will learn how to create a balanced life long exercise program using heart rate as a guide. May be offered in distance education delivery format. Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcomes for the Students: Upon completion of the course the student will be able to: describe the relationship between heart rate and energy system involved; 1. evaluate their aerobic fitness level based on heart rate; 2. operate a heart rate monitor; 3. describe heart rate training zones in relation to their overall fitness plan; 4. design a 30-day beginning exercise plan; 5. use heart rate as a guide to achieve optimum all around fitness; 6. use heart rate, exercise and diet to manage their weight.
