Chabot College/Las Positas College September 1994 Course Outline for Art 2B DRAWING AND COMPOSITION Catalog Description: 2B - Drawing and Composition 3 units Development of knowledge and skills introduced in Art 2A, emphasizing media and composition and introducing the use of color. Prerequisite: Art 2A completed with a grade of "C" or better. 2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio. Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should: 1. have continued to develop the skill of hand and eye coordination in drawing and have increased understanding of a variety of modes of visual representation and organization; 2. become familiar with color theory and with the pictorial uses of color in drawing; 3. develop advanced knowledge of and skills in graphite, charcoal ink and become familiar with color drawing media. Course Content: 1. Advanced free-hand linear perspective and light logic a. Panoramic and multiple point perspective b. Perspective in interior and exterior views c. Introduction to 3 point perspective d. Cast shadow projection principles e. Surface characteristics and light reflection 2. Organic form a. "Skeletal" structure ordering organic form b. "Planar" structure ordering organic form c. Gesture and contour ordering organic form 3. Introduction to color theory and mixing a. Hue (including hue circle) value, intensity b. Primary hues and complementary effects c. Tints, tones, shades e. Color schemes 4. Composition in values only and in color a. Distinction between and relating of two-dimensional and illusionistic three-dimensional compositions b. Composition based upon shape relations, linear relations and value relations such as value planes and on color relations such as temperature and advancing/receding colors. 5. Expression. Development of an awareness of personal responses to value only and color media, to form and to subject matter. Use of this awareness to make personal statements in drawing. 6.
