The schedule is as follows: September 16th September 30th BOOK DISCUSSION - Looking for some good reading? May we suggest The Gift by Hafiz, translated by Daniel Ladinsky. Then join us for discussion of this book on September 20th at 11:15 in the rectory living room. Reviewer Patricia Monaghan has this to say about The Gift: “Hafiz is so beloved in Iran that he outsells the Koran. Nothing is too human for Hafiz to celebrate, for in humanity he finds the prospect of God. In everything from housework to lovemaking, he celebrates the spiritual possibilities of life. A fine and stirring new presentation of one of the world's great poets”. IGNATIAN VOLUNTEER CORPS – There are a number of Boston area volunteer opportunities with the Ignatian Volunteer Corps. For more information, contact Steve Jubin at sjubin@ivcusa.org. OUTREACH MINISTRIES WHERE WE’VE BEEN… This has been a busy few months for parish Outreach involvement. Our monthly Shattuck service continued, even during the dog days of summer! The summertime cookout at Shattuck was a huge success, thanks to servers and food and cash donors. Outreach helpers ministered to the Guests at Cor Unum Meal Center in Lawrence in both July and August. Thanks so much to all of you who participated in any way. Hunger does not take a vacation, so our efforts are especially appreciated in the summer months when many agencies feel the absence of donors and volunteers. And we’ve wrapped up our annual back-to-school items drive. WHERE WE’RE GOING… We’ll soon be gearing up for a number of Outreach efforts. These include: monthly meal serving at Shattuck Shelter; participation in the October 18th Newton Walk for the World (aka, CROP Walk), a 10K which benefits both local agencies and Church World Services; our annual winter clothing drive for Shattuck Shelter Guests (October 24th/25th); Senior Outreach activities; and Christmas Gift Drive prep for the Drive which kicks off on November 21st. Stay tuned for additions to the list! FAITH FORMATION Registration for the 2009 – 2010 Faith Formation year is in full swing. Catechists: We have been very fortunate to always have very reliable, dedicated catechists. Now that it is September, we are hoping to fill all of our vacancies. At this point, we still need catechists for the following grades: 2 (need 2 catechists) 3 (need one catechist) 4 (need two catechists) 5 (need one catechist) Middle School (need 2-3 catechists) Confirmation Year I (see below)* *This year we are considering an alternative teaching model for our Confirmation Year I program (formally 9th grade). That year focuses on 5 units, and we are looking at having 5 volunteers each take one unit. Thus, a commitment in this program would only be for 4 weeks of the year. The units are World Religions, Old Testament, New Testament, Liturgy, Sacraments, and Prayer, and Catholic Social Teaching. If you are interested in helping us out, I would be happy to talk more about the commitment. We would be very grateful for any assistance!
