Using psalms and readings from Isaiah, Dr. Mirkin will connect these voices from the Hebrew Testament to our own life experiences, current challenges and hopes. According to Dr. Mirkin, “Isaiah can find hope and spiritual connection even during painful times, as he tries to answer the question ‘what does our God want from us individually and communally?’, so that we can be in a mutual relationship”. Trained as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Mirkin has been teaching at our parish for nearly ten years on psychological interpretations and the contemporary relevance of the Bible. Please join us in the Friary Room on February 27th from 10:00 – Noon for a program that is sure to enhance your Lenten journey. COME AWAY FOR THE WEEKEND This coming winter, St. Ignatius will be offering a women’s retreat at the Sacred Hearts Retreat Center in Wareham. Women of all ages are invited to a weekend away from 3pm on Friday, February 5th , through lunch on Sunday, February 7, 2010. Unlike the parish retreats, this retreat will not be silent, and will feature opportunities to relax, rest, pray, and talk with other women about life’s experiences. The cost of the weekend is $145 per participant and includes lodging and all meals. To register for this retreat, please email Amy Chapman at chapmaab@bc.edu or call 617-552-6103. A deposit of $50 is required. NATIVITY PREPARATORY SCHOOL'S 13TH ANNUAL NATIVITY SPIRIT SERVICE AWARD DINNER will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at Boston College High School. This year Nativity is pleased to recognize Mr. Kevin Leary and Ms. Mary Kelleher with the Raymond J. Callahan, S.J. Service Award. Nativity is celebrating its 20th year in operation and we would love for you to join in the festivities! Ticket prices start at $125 for an individual and $1,250 for a table of 10. Come to the table for conversation and learning about our faith tradition through Sunday scripture. The next Pasta and Prayer program will be on Thursday, January 21st, from 6:30 – 8:30 pm in the Friary Room. Lent will be here before we know it; why not do some advanced preparation with others in our parish family, over a meal? You don’t need to be a spiritual guru, just willing to participate in the conversation! Pre-registration is required so that we send you the Sunday readings in advance and plan the meal. Contact Amy Larson at 781-929-1835 by January 19th to reserve your spot at the table. Dear Parishioners, When you come to church this weekend, you will no longer see the beautiful symbols of the Christmas season that have enriched our prayer and worship since December 24th. We have returned to Ordinary Time in the Liturgical calendar, although this Sunday with the Gospel story of the Wedding Feast of Cana from John’s gospel continues the theme of “epiphany” or “showing forth” that we celebrated the past two Sundays on the feast of the Epiphany and the Baptism of the Lord. In John’s gospel, the Wedding Feast of Cana is the first “sign” or “showing forth” of the power and presence of God in Jesus. Given the centrality of the theme of transformation in this Gospel story, water changed into wine, we thought that this would be an appropriate time to begin again our custom of offering the Eucharistic cup to the community. The wine is transformed into the “blood of Christ” and our Lord, Jesus, invites us to “take and drink” from the cup. Because of health concerns, we temporarily refrained from offering the cup to the whole community. We believe that this was a wise decision at the time but now, after consultation with medical people within the community, we have decided that the Eucharistic wine should be available to those who desire to receive. Of course, we ask those who may have any cold symptoms to use common sense and not receive from the cup. On another note, this past Saturday we had a day of reflection for some of our parish leaders on the Pastoral Council and on parish Commissions. We were blessed to have with us Fr. Jim Conroy who led us in some exercises on “Ignatian discernment”. At the heart of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola is the experience of recognizing the movements of the spirit within our selves and in the groups with whom we live and work. Sometimes these “spirits” are experienced as “consolation”, as gift from God. Sometimes the energy around these experiences gives us feelings of “desolation”, disengagement, lifelessness and even hopelessness. Fr. Conroy, the director of the Jesuit Collaborative, gave us some guidance in helping us recognize and acknowledge these powerful spiritual movements that happen in our everyday lives. It is my hope that our whole parish may be more attuned to the wisdom of Ignatius of Loyola and some of the practical help Ignatian Spirituality can be in our every day life. More on this to come! Although we only have a month or so before Lent begins and we move out of “ordinary time” once again, I hope and pray that the power of the Gospel story which we hear this weekend can energize and transform us as a faithful community that listens attentively to the Word of God and delights in the mission of Jesus Christ that we share. FAITH FORMATION NEWS PERSONAL SAFETY PROGRAM The Archdiocese of Boston mandates that each year we offer a personal safety program to children in grades 1-8 of our Faith Formation program. We choose to offer this over three Sundays in January. This will be our fourth year doing the program. As in the past, you have the right to have your child opt out of the program. The Archdiocese requires that we keep records of how many people opt out of the program; it is also easier for us to plan when we know how many people will be attending each session. If your child(ren) is going to be absent or you wish to keep your child(ren) out of the program, please email me and let me know. Grades 1-5 (including ABP students) will meet from 9:00 – 9:45am and grades 6-8 will meet from 11:15 – 12:00. All classes will be held in the rectory.
