THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CONSTITUTION ON THE SACRED LITURGY This December marks the 50th anniversary of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy that was promulgated by the Bishops of the Second Vatican Council. As so many of us know, this document dramatically changed the way in which we celebrate the Mass. Changes in language, using the vernacular, orientation of the priest towards the people, as well as the inclusion of lay ministers in the celebration are only some of the ways in which we as a Church began to experience the Paschal Mystery in new yet very ancient ways. In the coming weeks and months, we will be including sections of the Constitution in the bulletin to give you an opportunity to reflect on this great Mystery of Faith. We will also have a discussion of the document on Sunday December 1st at 11:00 in the Choir/ Media room. All are invited. “. . . by baptism, all are plunged into the paschal mystery of Christ: they die with him, are buried with him, and rise with him” “[Christ] is present . . . when the Church prays and sings” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 7) Since the Second Vatican Council, parishioners have been encouraged to sing the texts of the liturgy. Much of the music of the liturgy is based on Scripture, and thus on the words and life of Christ. Music expresses the faith of the Church, but also builds unity and harmony. Singing and praying requires the use of our lungs, the breath that comes out of our being. Breath is an ancient word for the Spirit. When we pray and sing, the Spirit given to us in Baptism flows through us, empowering our words and music with Christ’s presence. When members of the Church pray and sing, their words are infused with Christ’s words. It is indeed Christ, present in the action of singing and prayer, who takes our prayers to God. JAMAICA RETURN! Once again, the parish is planning an immersion trip to Kingston, Jamaica to participate in the life of our sister parish, St. Anne's and St. Anne’s primary school. The proposed dates for the trip this year are January 18th-26th. If you are interested in finding out more about the trip, please contact Fr. Bob by November 25th. 1. As reports continue concerning the loss of life and the devastation of this storm, possibly the most severe in recorded history, we are committed to providing all possible assistance and support. At this time, I am joined with the bishops of the United States, gathered in Baltimore for the annual meeting, in developing a plan for outreach to the Filipino community, and a national collection to assist with relief efforts and the rebuilding that will be necessary in the Philippines. In this time of crisis, we turn to our Lord Jesus Christ, who has promised to be with us always, in prayer, for the souls of those who perished in the storm, and for the strength to bring the needed healing to the injured, and to assist the Philippines in recovering from this natural disaster. Together, we will go forward with our Filipino brethren as they carry out their mission in the Church and the world. MASS-TERING THE LITURGY PURPLE Lent is a major penitential season of preparation for Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday and, if the penitential days of Good Friday and Holy Saturday are included, lasts for forty days, since the six Sundays with the season are not counted. The purple of Lent symbolizes penance and reconciliation. On one Sunday during the season, Laetare Sunday, the color becomes rose. What is the Liturgical Color for Easter? Answer in Next Week’s Bulletin 3. “WE REMEMBER THEM": COPING WITH LOSS DURING THE HOLIDAYS The loss of a loved one is difficult any time of the year, but the holidays can be especially challenging for those struggling with bereavement. If grief has changed your experience and expectations for the holidays, if the peace and joy of the season seem far removed, you are not alone. Please join us and others of the parish family who have lost loved ones for a Service of Remembrance on Sunday afternoon, November 24th from 3:00-5:30 p.m . We will first gather in the Friary Room for companionship and the program will conclude with a prayer service in the Lannon Chapel. Light refreshments will be served. You are invited to bring a photo or memento of your loved one. For more information or to register for this program, please call the Parish Office at 617-552-6102. ADVENT MOVIE NIGHT To kick off our Advent journey, the Spiritual Life Commission will present a showing of the 2010 film "Of Gods and Men," winner of the Grand Prize of the Cannes Film Festival, 2010, and nominated for Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, 2011. The film explores the meaning and calling of Christmas in a world marked by sin and division, through the eyes of eight Trappist monks in Algeria. We will begin with a bite to eat in the Friary Room at 5:30 PM on Saturday, November 30, and then proceed to watch the film, ending with dessert and a shared reflection and discussion. Please RSVP if possible to have a food estimate. Email Pepe Ruiz, SJ <pepe@jesuits.net> WANT MORE INSIGHT INTO THE READINGS YOU HEAR AT MASS?
