OUTREACH MINISTRIES
CRS RICE BOWL – WEEK 3: PHILIPPINES
CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING FOCUS: OPTION FOR THE POOR
In December 2012, Typhoon Bopha hit the Philippines and destroyed the coastal town of Baganga.
Then, in November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan devastated the central region of the Philippines, an area
still recovering from a recent earthquake. In both cases, CRS was on the ground tending to those
hit first and worst by the storms. CRS Philippines is Catholic Relief Services’ oldest continuously
operating program. Prompted by the mass destruction and loss of life in the Philippines during
World War II, Catholic Relief Services, then called War Relief Services, first launched relief
efforts in that country in 1945. Today, CRS focuses on agriculture and peace-building programs in
the Philippines, and is ready to provide relief after natural disasters.
RICE BOWLS, with the Lenten calendar tucked inside, are on the Outreach table and in
the Lannon Chapel. To read each week’s story about the featured country, go to
www.crsricebowl.org and click on Stories of Hope.

THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CONSTITUTION ON THE SACRED LITURGY
“We journey as pilgrims”
(Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 8)
The “pilgrim people” is one of many images documents from the Second Vatican Council use for the Church. Being
a disciple is a journey of growing deeper in faith and communion with God. While each of our lives is a pilgrimage,
we are not alone on our journey, because the Church is on pilgrimage. We see the Church on pilgrimage every time
we gather for liturgy. Each individual at the liturgy is at a different place on the pilgrimage but journeying toward
the same goal: communion with God and one another. The Communion procession reflects this journey as we
journey to communion with Christ Jesus and one another. We all have the same destiny, though we might differ in
where we are within the pilgrimage.
3.
You are all cordially invited to a CD release concert featuring folk songs and ballads from Puerto Rico,
Latin America and Spain entitled: "Herencia Musical" (Musical Heritage) with Michelle Abadía, soprano
and guitarist on Sunday, February 9th, 2 pm in the Lower Chruch. Michelle's CD, (also entitled "Herencia
Musical") features samples of the rich and varied musical traditions of the Spanish-speaking world. They
will be available for purchase for $10.00 each. The actual performance is free and open to the parish
community and to the general public. A reception will follow the concert.
Ms. Abadía has served as a leader of song here at St. Ignatius for over 18 years, and has offered many
varied performances in this parish and all over the country and the world.
No knowledge of the Spanish language required!
Translalations and other program notes will be aavailable during the performance, as well as on the CD
itself.
