In preparation for the Synod on the Family in 2015, Pope Francis has asked for all Catholics to respond to questions about the Church's teaching, experience and evangelization regarding family life. Imagine! Pope Francis wants to hear from YOU! And me... :-) The challenge lies in the "how." This past week your Parish Pastoral Council made an effort to respond to the survey questions, some of which are very abstract, and some more concrete and simpler to answer. We would like to give all of our parishioners the opportunity to weigh in on these critical issues. Since the questions posed are "open response," and require more than "yes" or "no" answers, it takes time to offer a response. But we invite and urge you to participate. I am including here a link to a Google document where you can enter your answers to the survey questions. Feel free to reply to as many or as few as you'd like. We will do our best to synthesize your responses and pass them on to the Archdiocese and to the Vatican. When you go to the survey sight, there may be responses there already. You can add you own to those that are there. Since we need to complete this process by mid-December, your timely attention is appreciated! If you choose to respond to the survey, please indicate your age, marital status and any other pertinent information that will provide context for your response. This survey is not meant to bring about change in the Church's teaching on marriage and family life. It is meant to listen to the faithful and gain a better understanding of the pastoral challenges that we face together as a Church in the 21st Century. Some of us do hope that the complex issues of family life will be addressed by the Synod in a way that shows compassion, mercy and comprehension of the complexity of the issues in contemporary family life. Here is the link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1W6yPuuP7WHEo5b3QSzg7YmSrcFBCtKD6aCJlkAE59A/edit?usp=sharing We will do our best to communicate the diverse perspectives and experiences of St. Ignatius parishioners to the Archdiocese. Who knows? Maybe I'll even get one of those phone calls from my brother Jesuit, Pope Francis! Gratefully, Fr. Bob 1. The Mass on Thanksgiving Day will be at 10:00. The Church will close after this Mass. HAPPY THANKSGIVING COLLECTION ON THANKSGIVING DAY We are blessed to have with us Fr. Maurice Ashley from Cameroon. Fr Maurice has asked if we could help a school in his diocese that gives poor students a place to study, stay and receive good nutrition. Some of the students will go on to the Seminary to serve the church as priests. The Thanksgiving Day Collection will be taken up for Blessed John XXIII Minor Seminary in Fortabong, Mamfe, Cameroon. JAMAICA RETURN! Once again, the parish is planning an immersion trip to Kingston, Jamaica to participate in the life of our sister parish, St. Anne's and St. Anne’s primary school. The proposed dates for the trip this year are January 18th-26th. If you are interested in finding out more about the trip, please contact Fr. Bob by November 25th. ADVENT MOVIE NIGHT To kick off our Advent journey, the Spiritual Life Commission will present a showing of the 2010 film "Of Gods and Men," winner of the Grand Prize of the Cannes Film Festival, 2010, and nominated for Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, 2011. The film explores the meaning and calling of Christmas in a world marked by sin and division, through the eyes of eight Trappist monks in Algeria. We will begin with a bite to eat in the Friary Room at 5:30 PM on Saturday, November 30, and then proceed to watch the film, ending with dessert and a shared reflection and discussion. Please RSVP if possible to have a food estimate. THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CONSTITUTION ON THE SACRED LITURGY “The Church is the Lord’s beloved Bride” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 7) The Second Vatican Council likened the bond between Christ and the Church to the nuptial bond. Just as the couple promises faithfulness, so Christ will be faithful to the Church. Just as the nuptial bond is not to be broken, the bond between Christ and the Church will not be broken. As a couple’s actions with others are to mirror their love for each other, so the Church is to reflect Christ’s love to the world. The union between Christ and the Church is rooted in faith and strengthened in the liturgy. The bond is made intimate during the liturgy as Christ’s Word enters our being as the Scriptures are read and we partake of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. As Christ’s deep bond of love becomes a part of us, we are transformed. This transformation changes us toward the holiness of Christ. Answer from Last Week: HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW What is the liturgical color for Easter? YOUR CHURCH? MASS-TERING THE LITURGY What is the name of the vessel used at Mass to distribute the Blood of Christ? WHITE OR GOLD Easter is the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. The date of Easter varies from year to year, according to a lunar-calendar dating system. In the Roman Rite, the Easter season extends from the Easter Vigil through Pentecost Sunday. STOP BY THE TABLE IN THE GATHERING SPACE TO PARTICIPATE. ADVENT PRESENTATION BY MARSHA MIRKIN In this season, as we ponder Mary giving birth to Jesus, let us also reflect on the story from the Hebrew Testament of Rebecca who gave birth to Israel. On December 14th from 10:00-noon Marsha Mirkin will return to St. Ignatius to lead us in considering Rebecca’s story. In Torah we meet Rebecca as an adolescent who is destined to become the mother of Israel, the God-given name for her son Jacob. Who is this young woman? What journey does she need to take in order to eventually become the mother of Israel? What qualities does she have to exemplify, and what vision and hope does she need to carry? As we immerse ourselves in this season, what does Rebecca teach us about our own lives, and in particular, about generosity, vision, and faith? Join us in Friary Room of the lower church as we study the life of one of our remarkable foremothers. ST.
