ADVENT PRESENTATION BY MARSHA MIRKIN
In this season, as we ponder Mary giving birth to Jesus, let us also reflect on the story from the Hebrew
Testament of Rebecca who gave birth to Israel. On December 14th from 10:00-noon ,Marsha Mirkin will return to
St. Ignatius to lead us in considering Rebecca’s story. In Torah we meet Rebecca as an adolescent who is destined to
become the mother of Israel, the God-given name for her son Jacob. Who is this young woman? What journey does
she need to take in order to eventually become the mother of Israel? What qualities does she have to exemplify,
and what vision and hope does she need to carry? As we immerse ourselves in this season, what does Rebecca
teach us about our own lives, and in particular, about generosity, vision, and faith? Join us in Parish Office Dining
Room where will we study the life of one of our remarkable foremothers.
BOOK DISCUSSION
Would reading some poetry enhance your Advent? May we suggest Incarnadine by Mary Szybist. According to
NPR’s Craig Morgan Teicher "Szybist is a skeptic who thinks a lot about faith, a believer in doubt, though as a
series of 'Announcement' poems attest she finds God all around--in everything from the distracted discourse of
former President Bush to the sound of 'a vacuum / start[ing] up next door.' . . . More than anything, though,
Szybist is a humble and compassionate observer of the complicated glory of the world and humanity's ambivalent
role in it, as inheritors and interlopers.” On December 15th there will be a discussion of this book in the parish
offices at 11:15. Come and tell us which poem is your favorite.
ST. IGNATIUS WOMAN’S RETREAT

entire weekend is $240 with a deposit of $50 at registration. The retreat will be held at the Connors Retreat Center
in Dover from January 3rd-5th. The theme of the retreat is “Epiphany: Your Light has Come!” The director is Sr.

THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CONSTITUTION ON THE SACRED LITURGY
“In the liturgy the whole public worship is performed by the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ”
(Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 7)
Liturgy means “the work of the people.” It is an ancient Greek word used theologically by St. Paul, but it was employed before
him by Aristotle, who used it to describe the public work done on behalf of the city. Liturgy is public worship because it is the
activity of the Church. Liturgy is thus communal, a gathering together of the members of the Church. One image the Second
Vatican Council used for the Church is the “Mystical Body of Christ.” The Body of Christ refers to the Church and to the
Eucharistic species. In receiving the Eucharistic species, members of the Church grow in deeper union with God and one
another. What holds the Church together is the power and presence of Christ united to each of us. The liturgical act is a
communal act performed by those united to one another and in deep communion with Christ as the Church, the Body of Christ.
REMEMBERING THE CHURCHWOMEN OF EL SALVADOR
MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2013
In December 1980, four US Church women were raped, murdered and buried in a shallow grave outside San
Salvador. Jean Donovan, Ita Ford, MM, Dorothy Kazel, OSU, and Maura Clark, MM, were working to keep hope
and faith alive in El Salvador. Just prior to their deaths Carol [Carla] Piette, MM, drowned in a rescue mission in El
Salvador. Thirty-three years later, people of faith throughout the world recall their faithful witness and dedication
to the Gospel and the continued struggle for justice of the people of El Salvador.
A prayer service to remember these churchwomen and the people of El Salvador will take place at 5:30 p.m. on
Monday, December 2, 2013, at the Motherhouse Chapel of the Sisters of St. Joseph, ,\637 Cambridge St.
Brighton.
FAITH –BASED CANCER SUPPORT GROUP
The next Faith-Based Cancer Support Group will meet on Monday, Dec. 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady Help of
Christians Church, 573 Washington Street, Newton. Fr. Bob Blaney (Parochial Vicar of Sacred Heart and Our
Lady’s parishes in Newton) will give a beautiful "Transformation & Healing through Music" Piano Concert after
the Mass in the upper church. A graduate of Boston College's School of Management, Fr Bob was a professional
actor in New York City for 13 years, and from 1998 to 2001 he starred in the play ‘2 Pianos, 4 Hands” on Broadway
and across the U.S. Since being ordained a priest in 2007, he has served in Franklin, West Roxbury and South
Boston.
