CONCERT PRESENTED BY MICHELLE ABADIA
You are all cordially invited to a CD release concert featuring folk songs and ballads from Puerto Rico, Latin
America and Spain entitled: "Herencia Musical"(Musical Heritage) with Michelle Abadía, soprano and guitarist.
Sunday, February 9th, 2:00 pm Lower Church, Lannon Chapel. Michelle's CD, (also entitled "Herencia Musical")
features samples of the rich and varied musical traditions of the Spanish-speaking world. They will be available for
purchase for $10.00 each.
The actual performance is free and open to the parish community and to the general
public. A reception will follow the concert.
SPRING DISCUSSION GROUP 2014
Our spring discussion group is now forming. We will meet, as usual, at the Jesuit residence, 130 Beacon Street, at
7:30 PM for four Wednesday evenings starting February 19th and ending on March 19th. There will be no
meeting on Ash Wednesday, March 5th. We will end by 9:00 PM each evening.
Frs. Bob and J.A. will host the meetings. This is in some ways a continuation of our conversations about Ann
Rice’s book Christ the Lord: the Road to Cana that we discussed in the fall.
In the spring we will take up Reza Aslan’s best-selling new book called Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of
Nazareth (NY: Random House, 2013). This non-fiction work proposes that Jesus was, indeed, a political
revolutionary who was executed for treason by the Roman occupying army. He was one of many such zealots in
his time.
The contrast between the two images of Jesus should prove interesting fodder for discussion and offer an
opportunity for each of us to re-assess our own working image of just exactly who Jesus was and is for us today.
The book should be available through local bookstores and at Amazon.com.
Space is limited. To reserve a space please contact Betty in the office (Ignatius@bc.edu or 617-552-6102) as soon
as possible.

CONCERT IN ST. IGNATIUS
Please join us for the world première of Missa gentis humanæ, a Mass for 8-voice a cappella choir by Ralf Yusuf
Gawlick, parishioner and Boston College professor, on Monday, February 17th, 2014, at 8 pm here in our church.
The Mass, performed by Julian Wachner and the Grammy-nominated Choir of Trinity Wall Street, interweaves the
words of the Mass Ordinary with texts from the main branches of Indo-European language families. The concert,
supported and sponsored by Boston College, is free and open to the public.
LENT IS ON ITS WAY!
Each year, on the last Sunday before Lent, we burn the palm branches, blessed on the prior Palm
Sunday, to be used at the services on Ash Wednesday. On the weekends of February 15th-16th, 22nd-23rd
and March 1st – 2nd, there will be baskets at the entrances of the church for you to place these
branches, so that they can be gathered up and burned before the 5:30 PM Liturgy on March 2nd.. You are
also welcome to join us for a brief prayer service on the front steps of the church at 5:10 pm before the palms are
committed to the flames.
BOOK DISCUSSION
On February 16th at 11:15, there will be a book discussion in the living room of the Parish Offices. This month’s
book is Zealot by Reza Aslan. When asked what he hopes readers will take away from this book, the author shared
his hope that "this book provides readers with a more complete sense of the world in which Jesus lived.’’ We
cannot truly understand Jesus’ words and deeds if we separate them from the religious and political context of his
time. Regardless of whether you think of Jesus as a prophet, a teacher, or God incarnate, it is important to
remember that he did not live in a vacuum…. This book ... drops you in the middle of Jesus’ world and helps you
understand the context out of which he arose and in which he preached. Please join us for a discussion of this
interesting book.
THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CONSTITUTION ON THE SACRED LITURGY
“The liturgy . . .
moves the faithful, filled with ‘the paschal sacraments,’ to be ‘one in holiness.’”
(Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 10)
The liturgy enacts the saving or healing presence of Christ that removes human brokenness, sin, and death. In place, Christ
gives the gifts of love, peace, justice, and life. This is the Paschal Mystery: Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection. The
Spirit empowers us to move from death (brokenness, fragmentation, and sin) toward life (healing, communion, and love).
God’s gift of the Spirit, given in Baptism, allows us to receive Christ’s presence in his Word and Eucharist so that we might be
more united to the Father. This transformation by the Trinity leads us closer to the holiness God desires and at the same time
brings about a greater harmony and unity (communion) between the faithful and God.
